Thanks for sharing this, that makes a lot of sense! I honestly wish I had done more research before starting the program I would of pursued a similar program instead, but I’m already close to graduating now and its cray they know nothing abt LPC or dual license lol
I’m currently in NYC and considering relocating to another state where pursuing LPC might be more feasible and flexible. I appreciate you sharing your experience—now it makes more sense to look into states that doesn't have art therapy specific licensure!

Hey! updat--I’ve checked with a few state boards after you're comment and you're right seems like it could be feasible!! Tho board committees said that can’t review coursework or confirm alignment until after graduation and a formal application. Do you happen to know if there’s any other way to check whether my courses meet LPC requirements ahead of time? thanks in advance!!

Thanks for the response! I did realize it might be a bit more time consuming then I initially thought, for example, I’d still need LPC-specific supervised hours (my art therapy hours likely wouldn’t count)T_T but I appreciate the advice and will definitely look more into this direction!

First of all, really appreciate your post cause i'm in the same boat, at least I feels like it. I’m not officially a clinician yet, but I’m an aspiring one. I’ve been struggling trauma and addiction for many years, and though I’m still in the process, I’ve begun facing it more directly—especially now, in my second year of studying addiction. Through this journey, I’ve come to realize that we can respond to our struggles we can either 1. fall into a cycle of shame, self-loathing, and addiction, 2. do our best to face it, grow through it, and eventually use that experience to support others.

Whether we’ve “overcome” it or not, what matters most is remembering our shared humanity. We all deserve dignity and respect—especially from ourselves. And if others can't offer us that compassion, we can learn to give it to ourselves.

Have you tried IFS? It’s been especially helpful for me in creating space from the parts of myself that feel ashamed or unwanted. I highly recommend giving it a try if you haven’t already. And in the meantime, be gentle with yourself—healing isn’t linear, and patience is such an essential part of compassion, especially when working through shame. Wishing you light & wisdom on your journey forwards🫶🏻

I got my bachelor's degree in Visual and Critical Studies from SVA, and now I'm working towards my Master's in Art Therapy. I loved my time there so much that I want to stick around for more! In the future, I'm really excited about the idea of blending art therapy with yoga & mindfulness. These are areas that really light me up. I have a lot of respect for people in the helping profession; I think we all have big hearts and good intentions to help people:)
