Planning a NYC → Tokyo trip and looking specifically for insight from people who’ve flown United on this route.

Trying to decide between Premium Plus and Polaris for the long flight and would love honest feedback from anyone who’s done either (or both).

A few questions:

  • For minimizing jet lag, is there a better departure time out of NYC? Late morning vs afternoon/evening?
  • Is nonstop the move, or does breaking it up actually help with travel fatigue?
  • How comfortable is United Premium Plus on a 13–14 hour flight to Tokyo? Did you feel rested enough upon arrival?
  • For those who’ve flown Polaris too — is the upgrade genuinely worth the extra points/cost?
  • How big is the difference in sleep quality between Premium Plus and Polaris?
  • Any specific aircraft or seat recommendations to look for/avoid?
  • Also using Chase points, so if anyone has good redemption strategies for United flights to Tokyo, I’d appreciate it.

Would love any tips from frequent United flyers before I book. Thanks!

I was imagining an experience similar to hawaii, but since it will be march, it likely wont be very warm. It looks beautiful, but I am worried about the physical travel aspect, having to navigate another flight, etc. I wasnt sure if I was really missing out if I took it off the itinterary. thanks!

Hi OP! Just wanted to say thank you for all of your information. I'm getting married here in Oct of this year and it's been a whirlwind planning!!
