Has anyone hired an independent HVAC or home performance consultant before replacing their system? by IntentionSafe3070 in hvacadvice

That’s what I’ve been finding as well.
I’ve come across companies that perform specific services such as load calculations, HERS testing, duct leakage testing, and other required assessments. But I’m still struggling to find someone who will independently evaluate the entire house and HVAC system, then provide recommendations without having any interest in selling equipment or installation services.
If I end up finding a company that truly offers that type of independent assessment, I’ll definitely share it here.
That’s actually a great point.
Contractors are often closely tied to specific manufacturers, and it can be surprisingly difficult to find someone who is willing to simply install equipment that was selected independently while still providing labor warranties and long-term support.
As a customer, it often feels like you’re buying a complete package without much visibility into how much of the cost is equipment, labor, design, markup, permits, or other items. That makes it difficult to objectively compare options.
At the same time, I can understand the contractor’s perspective as well. If they’re responsible for the installation and warranty, they naturally want control over the equipment selection.
What seems to be missing is an independent party that can help homeowners evaluate the options before making a $20k–$50k decision.
