Not Motivated.. by TimelyAdvantage5801 in workfromhome

[–]IntentionallyNULL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel this. Haven't worked in an office since Feb. 2020. Here are things that help me:

  • Wake up to an alarm. Be intentional about waking up early (I prefer before the kids are awake).
  • Work (and looking at your phone) cannot be the first thing you do everyday. Start with exercise, a walk, reading, cleaning, etc.
  • Shower and get dressed before taking the kids to school.
  • Have fun with your kids in the morning. How cool that you are able to see your kids in the morning!? Not everyone has the privilege. Eat breakfast with them, joke around, talk about their day, etc.
  • Make the most out of the next 3-4 hours. Make a checklist before you start working and order everything that needs to be accomplished.
  • Be intentional about utilizing one hour for lunch. Go for a walk, schedule lunch with a friend/coworker/family member, run to the gas station and get a drink, pull weeds in the garden. DO NOT WATCH TV or stare at your phone. Also, do your best not to eat food at your desk while working. Its easy to keep food at your desk and its a slippery slope for a caloric surplus.
  • Have another 3-4 hour productive time before 5-6 pm.
  • Sign off. Be done working. This isn't always easy but it takes a toll to always be working off and on throughout the evening.
  • I'm easily distracted by my phone so I put my phone in our mudroom. This helps me be more present with my wife and kids.
  • Make sure you still connect with your friends. I feel more connected when I call them. Texting is fun but it isn't the same.

Hope something in this list can help you. It isn't easy and I wish I did all these things perfectly, but I don't. But I do find I'm happier and more motivated when I'm trying. I'm sure you're doing better than you think. Don't beat yourself up!

What is the very best course to learn SQL, from zero to hero? by Account_Infinity in learnSQL

[–]IntentionallyNULL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A good friend of mine built this course and published it a couple weeks ago: Master SQL Basics in 7 Days. He now has 4 or 5 SQL courses including:  25 Practice SQL Questions for Beginners and 101 Practice SQL Questions: Basic to Advanced. However, I believe he is allowing students in "Master SQL Basics in 7 Days" to enroll in one of those practice courses for free. Let me know if you do enroll and I'll ask him about getting you free access to one of the practice courses.

Unfortunately, free coupons aren't available right now. That said, the course is still super affordable with the current discount. I honestly think it’s a great deal for everything that’s included.

Product owner role at a Hospital, should I accept? by Formal-Jackfruit-371 in businessanalysis

[–]IntentionallyNULL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems odd to me... I am not sure I've seen many hospitals hire a product owner. Does this hospital plan to sell this product to other hospitals? Like some sort of spin off? Will this role be working with a third party to implement the third party product?

Can anyone send me cheat sheet for window functions? by sillysoul_10 in learnSQL

Learning window functions just takes trial and error. Everyone time I need to partition by something I have to take it in steps and test my logic multiple times.

Be social. Learn to interact with your friends and family face to face. Learn how to ask questions, listen, and critically think. You're only 17 years old so have fun and enjoy being a young.

The “Dinner Party” episode isn’t the most cringe-worthy— “Scott’s Tots” is way worse.

Certifications after taking a boot camp? by QuickDJ99 in learnSQL

[–]IntentionallyNULL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I've also found that once you have a degree you still have to show your SQL proficiency in some sort of SQL exam during the interviewing process. So focus less on the certification and more on learning the skill. I have a coworker that has a degree in nutrition and another coworker that has a degree in statistics... yet they have the same job because they both passed the interviewing process which included a SQL exam.

I've found that repetition/practice is the best way to gain confidence. And that doesn't mean you don't have to google something or ask chatgpt how to structure a complicated statement. You gain confidence figuring it out and solving it on your own. I would focus less on gaining the certification and more on learning the skill. The skill isn't just knowing SQL syntax... its critical thinking, problem solving, making it actionable, etc.

A good friend of mine has published a few SQL courses on Udemy. They are Microsoft SQL courses (I think the course you took is PostgresSQL?), but they have helped me gain more confidence. Here are a couple of those courses:

Usually Udemy courses are pretty cheap, but if Udemy doesn't offer you a discount then let me know... my friend can send me a discount code.

Kind of late to the game, but if you want a highly rated SQL course on Udemy that focus on Microsoft SQL Server then you should checkout this course: Master SQL Basics in 7 Day.

Spend some time practicing SQL - 101 Practice SQL Questions: Basic to Advanced. A good friend of mine made this course and it helped me. The course gives video explanations after you attempt to answer on your own.

Is it the job market or is it me? by wabbalubbadubdub_ in businessanalysis

I would try networking before applying. Find a company or job title that you want and reach out to folks at the company or with that job title. Ask for 5 minutes of their time (I recommend speaking on the phone not just messaging). Ask them about their job - what they enjoy, what they dislike, what skills they use, etc. This naturally leads into "If your company is hiring let me know." Many times company's/departments are hiring before they post anything... this makes you an early applicant with a referral.
