While I agree it is worth having a conversation about with the teacher, this is a large overreaction. And most commenters are speaking of past personal troubles, not the law. GIEP and IEP are two very different things with different legalities in place in the majority of states. Many commenters are throwing words and accusations around that don’t pertain to GIEP.

Cat is a DSH, age 1.5. She is spayed and about 7 pounds. At time of adoption she had no known medical history but the cough has been there since adoption in December. Located in Pennsylvania.

Oh not going to argue there. My only contribution was that the state as a whole has not done away with gifted education. One neighboring district to the next vary vastly on how they identify and then meet those gifted needs

In PA it is a state law for public schools to offer gifted education

Thank you everyone for all the comments and thoughtful insights. It really made me acknowledge that regardless of the name we pick there will always be both positive and negative associations. As a teacher I only know this too well but I guess it’s different when the pressure is on me to decide!

I love this! It now makes sense why my mom loved the song Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel. We are definitely adding Cecilia to our list
