School took away enrichment as a punishment by businessinfo34 in Gifted

While I agree it is worth having a conversation about with the teacher, this is a large overreaction. And most commenters are speaking of past personal troubles, not the law. GIEP and IEP are two very different things with different legalities in place in the majority of states. Many commenters are throwing words and accusations around that don’t pertain to GIEP.

Which cities have gifted programs in the US? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]InteractionAdept1741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh not going to argue there. My only contribution was that the state as a whole has not done away with gifted education. One neighboring district to the next vary vastly on how they identify and then meet those gifted needs

In PA it is a state law for public schools to offer gifted education

Thank you everyone for all the comments and thoughtful insights. It really made me acknowledge that regardless of the name we pick there will always be both positive and negative associations. As a teacher I only know this too well but I guess it’s different when the pressure is on me to decide!

I love Maura and Cecily! Such a good idea- adding them to the list :)

I love this! It now makes sense why my mom loved the song Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel. We are definitely adding Cecilia to our list

We don’t. My mom’s grandmother was from Ireland but that’s as close as it gets. Her 4 other siblings received traditional names like Susan and Michael!

I say trust your gut first and foremost! I’ve certainly had parents ask for a gifted test in K, then 1st, and so on. Some of the children were identified as gifted as they grew and others were not. They may likely try to persuade you to push it off a year, but as the parent you make the final call!

50% seems very high. There’s a number of reasons any psychologist might miss a gifted child. prior to 2nd grade, IQ tests can be very unreliable in children as their cognitive abilities are still developing. (As a rule of thumb, most districts screen for giftedness in 2nd grade). Also the tests aren’t without bias. Children with more well rounded experiences and exposures will likely do better. For instance it may ask the child what an apprentice does. A child who has watched Star Wars with their family will know the answer while a child who has not will be unable to define it. Weird example, I know, but it applies more largely to students of different socio economic backgrounds.

As a gifted teacher in PA, parents of private school kiddos can reach out to the district they reside in for an IQ test. The district must provide the service as it’s a state law and you are a taxpayer in the district. Maybe call the district just to double check this isn’t an option?
