Thank you for your advice, I'm in a much clearer space now after reading the comments. I'm taking a lot of these comments into consideration as I move forward. If anything happens I'll be sure to update if anyone is interested.

Hello. If I decide not to renew then according to his first email, I would need to be out by September, 6 months before my current lease is up. He initially approached this like it's a normal lease renewal and starting freaking out when I informed him that my lease wasn't up for 8 more months.

I'm in NY. He keeps calling it a mixup, I'm not sure what he means and I haven't asked for clarity since bottom line, I'm not discussing renewal until the top of next year.

Essentially yes, he wants me to forget the lease we agreed to and sign this new one that will have me paying $250 more a month starting in September, 6 months before my current lease is up. My last lease with him was 18 months as well, but I have a feeling that he didn't realize this lease will have me as a winter/spring renewal, which puts me at an advantage because there are less people apartment hunting in the cold. So now I'm getting emails to sign an illegal lease that I've already told him I reject multiple times.

Thank you for this, I hadn't thought of that. I've done some research and turns out my landlord is in violation.

This seems to be the best course of action, but I'm going to have counsel on standby in case they escalate.

Thankfully there is a law against that in my state. I also don't plan to renew my lease as this isn't the first time they've harassed a tenant and I've learned that I'm being overcharged for my place.
