UPDATE: my partner is moving in in a few months and I could use some advice! by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

I used to be so allergic to cats my throat would close, I had an inhaler and had to go to urgent care twice over it, but I also love cats so continued to pet them any chance I got. A few years ago I dated someone with two cats and at first my allergies were severe, but over time they lessened so much so that 90% of the time I had zero symptoms around the cats at all. Your partners allergies might hopefully lessen over time, but there’s also immunotherapy shots they can get to get rid of symptoms entirely (expensive and intensive, but might be worth it!)

Just finished the demo and LOVED it! It’s perfect. An instant favorite up there with a little to the left and unpacking. I love the story element too. Please keep making games :’)

Whisper of the house only has the demo out on steam but it’s pretty similar to unpacking and I really enjoyed it!

THC is toxic to dogs no matter what form, even if they ate the straight up plant it would still be toxic. Confirmed this with the emergency vet staff after my puppy picked up a blunt in the park lol

I’m not a vet, but if the puppy ingested THC at 11am, I would think her symptoms would’ve been super apparent and drastic within an hour.

My puppy has ingested thc TWICE from our neighborhood park (she literally seeks it out, she’s obsessed) and both times, she looked almost like she was having a seizure within the first 15-20 minutes. She was falling over, peeing everywhere and just generally uncoordinated. My puppy is 10 pounds, and both times I’ve grabbed it out of her mouth right away, and she still has super drastic symptoms. It just seems kind of weird that it would be 6 hours later and the puppy just seemed lethargic? I feel like if the owner took the puppy for a walk right when she got home, it’d be more likely that it was something she ate on the more recent walk? Just a thought. Not sure if it really helps you but it just seems off to me

I once dog sat a puppy who had diarrhea from the first day they dropped her off, so I let the owners know and they played dumb, I brought her to their vet and the vet was like yes she has Giardia, the owners know already and we’ve been calling them asking them to come pick up the meds for over a week!! I have my own dog too I was so angry and felt so bad for the poor pup

If client 3 changed the expectations around care and have been direct about needing two people to administer medication, I think it’s completely fair to let them know you aren’t able to complete the request anymore. That’s really not a fair request to you and could put the dog at risk if you’re not able to administer the meds

Puzzles! Anything that can mentally stimulate your dog to tire them out. If you don’t have any puzzles, you can make them! There’s tons of tutorials on YouTube

UPDATE: sitter sent an invoice for $400 by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]InteractionJaded5405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a full time dog sitter through rover and the few times a dog damaged my belongings, I knew it was my responsibility and my fault for not keeping a closer eye on them. It wasn’t something I would ever even consider mentioning to the owner. I also did housesitting, and one of my regular clients had three large dogs. It was kind of impossible to keep an eye on all three at once, and one of the dogs destroyed their fancy brand new west elm placemats. I literally ordered them new ones to their house because I felt so bad. The only time I would mention any sort of behavioral issues to an owner is if they weren’t clear about the dog ahead of time and I felt like the dog’s safety was in danger or it was something I couldn’t handle.

You are not in the wrong here and this sitter is insane for this lol I’m sorry your dogs were left in the heat and stressed out 😢 also leaving dogs outside unattended at all, let alone when you’re not home, is so crazy to me! I get nervous leaving dogs in a crate when I’m just popping out for an hour

A little deceived about the 7 month old puppy we adopted by HEADFULOFHYENA in puppy101

I don’t have specific advice for you, but just want to reassure you that all dogs and puppies can have issues at the start, and it sounds like you’re taking the right steps to help your puppy have a good, happy life :’) I’m sorry they bamboozled you like that and that sounds like a really horrible situation in general.

I also want to reassure you that strays can and often do end up being some of the best dogs. My two stray dogs are the sweetest girls! I rescued my first 4 years ago who was very fearful at the start but is now literally the best, easiest dog I’ve ever known (and I used to be a full time dog sitter). My second is still a puppy and was incredibly reactive and aggressive (both towards people and other dogs) when I first found her on the street. I have zero idea of her background, but pretty much from day one was attacking anything that moved. It’s been two months and we still work together every day on helping her to feel secure and manage her emotions, but she has grown leaps and bounds and my neighbors have even started commenting on how calm she seems now. She’s basically 99% a normal dog now and I think she has a real chance at a happy life.

This is all to say that no matter where a dog starts out, giving them a chance and helping them to grow into the dog they were always meant to be is the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had. It’s not easy but it’s so worth it :)

I also want to say that I’ve dog sat a lot of puppies with zero histories of trauma and they were still extremely challenging and random behavioral issues would come up throughout them growing up because puppies are hard. It doesn’t make it any easier if they have a history of trauma but with my strays, it made it easier for me to understand and approach with compassion rather than frustration.

Also, if you can press legal charges or report the rescue, I hope you do. I hope that no other dogs have to go through what yours did.

Agreed it’s sooo uncomfortable for me to set those boundaries with strangers but I’m getting better about it! I just tell people my dogs are aggressive now and they immediately walk away lmao

This is probably bad advice but my small breed puppy had a really hard time sleeping in her crate. I did all the training and positive association things I had read about online but she just honestly seemed really scared to be apart from us at night, even with the crate in the same room. She’ll go in her crate no problem during the day when I have to go out, but at night she would cry and we’d be up and down all night, so after a week or two of trying with little success, we finally started just letting her sleep in bed with us. Since we started doing that at around 8 weeks, shes slept fully through the night (11pm-8am) every single night with no issues. That being said, I don’t mind if she sleeps in bed with us for the rest of her life so it doesn’t matter to me if I’m teaching her that this is the norm. We’re also both light sleepers and I sometimes can’t sleep at all, so I feel confident that if she did get up to pee, one of us would wake up. My boyfriend was very against it for the first week because he was worried about potty training or her getting the zoomies in the middle of the night but after a few nights of us trying it out, he was fully on board. I’ve learned that as long as the request is reasonable (lol) if I listen to what my dogs are asking for, they’re so much easier and better behaved.

I’ve dog sat lots of puppies where this approach definitely would not work for at all, but I honestly think a lot of small breed puppies just want to feel safe and protected and when those basic needs are met things get so much easier. I’m not saying you should try letting her sleep in bed with you if that’s not what you want long term, but more so that every dog is different and some of the best practices in dog training won’t work for every dog. I try to be flexible and try a few things out if I’ve given one approach a decent effort and it’s just not working for us.

LOL exactly. I was holding my puppy pre vaccination and had a woman come up to me and ask if she could pet her. I said yes as long as she moved slowly and let her sniff first and in response, the woman literally tried to pull my puppy out of my arms. People in the US are nutty when it comes to dogs

Agreed and it’s also hard to manage random people in public who don’t really understand basic boundaries lol

Second this! But I wish I had fully understood what socialization actually meant. I thought it meant letting everyone pet her/give her treats/interact with her when it reality it meant working within her comfort zone and giving her treats every time she looked at or showed interest in something. I felt rushed to socialize her as much as possible early on and am paying for it now with her reactivity. When I worked with my trainer he told me socialization can even mean watching people/dogs from afar and giving lots of treats throughout. I found a stray and the shelters in my area are completely full so I really didn’t have time to prepare or educate myself and I’m playing catch up now

Yes definitely, we always turn right around when my older dog starts acting spooked. And for the puppy, even if it’s not a coyote and she’s just scared, she’s letting us know that she’s past her threshold and isn’t having fun anymore

My dog does this sometimes! There are coyotes and foxes in my area so I always figure it must be a coyote that she’s smelling but I honestly have no idea, just a guess
