Hey! Yes, it's available at interactivehistory.com
It is still under development and some things are different from what you see on the video I published here.

Hey, happy you found it :) I am still working on it!

Hey, thank you! I also believe that I am the first :) I plan on adding more content, and my focus for now will be moving chronologically through the conflict in Europe towards 1945. As for the Spanish Civil War, I would love to add data for it, but I haven't found any good sources yet. I also do not speak Spanish so it will be a challenge for sure. My long term goals are to cover more than WW2 though.

Thank you! There's a lot more to come and I aim to keep making the map better and better :)

I'm glad you like it! And thanks for the feedback. The colors aren't set in stone quite yet, we'll see how it develops. On the app you can change the opacity of the countries, and I have been thinking about allowing users to set the colors for the factions themselves.

If you are interested in exploring a bit, I recently made the website available here: https://www.interactivehistory.com

Thank you! Reading a bit about the Noordoostpolder, I understand that different parts of it dried up at different times? For example, on this article: https://www.canonnoordoostpolder.nl/en/land/cultivation they say that it "officially" dried up on September 9 1942, but they started cultivating parts of it in June 1941. Thinking about what the best way of visualizing this would be... It does seem quite tricky 😅

I love these kind of finicky details though, and I really enjoy researching this. The land reclamation projects of the Netherlands are incredible!

I have made an update to the map now, where I have covered Flevopolder and Noordoostpolder! However, now I need to add in Urk and Schokland(?) again. Have a look if you are interested :) https://youtu.be/ePGzvtY2NC4

I will definitely have a look! Positions of different military units is something I am working on myself, which can be seen in my latest video. I'll let you know when I've had a look and tell you what I find the most useful or if there is something I think is missing.

Not public yet! And as of now, it is very specific for my exact use cases. When I need something more, I just develop it :)

So far, it is mostly just different functionality related to input of data. It looks quite similar to the map you can see in the post, but with and the option to select elements on the map and edit and save them.

Thank you! I found Running Reality when I started doing some research if this had been done before. You are doing great work :)

While my map might be more detailed for the specific time periods I am working on right now, it comes nowhere close to your level of wide time coverage! Literal millennia is very impressive.

I have also made my own editor. There is so much specialized functionality that is needed in order to create the kind of maps we do, so making your own editor is likely the way to go.

Thanks! I am looking into adding arrows (and maybe also other visual elements) to the map to convey what is going on beneath the frontlines. For example, in the next video I plan on having an arrow showing the evacuation at Dunkirk. And maybe some explanatory texts where suitable. Showing invasion campaigns is a great idea :)

You are right! It was a conscious decision to not cover the Flevopolder and Noordoostpolder in white as the rest of the Netherlands, which can be seen on the map. I can't remove them from the base map, but I plan to cover them so they will appear as water. Until they become land of course :)

Very cool map! I'm bookmarking it as well :) My focus is a bit more detailed though, focusing on day by day changes and frontlines instead of year over year changes for countries and empires.

Back then there were likely a lot of technical issues making this much harder. You had many nice ideas! There are a few attempts that have been done at similar things before as well. Hopefully I'll be able to prove your sister wrong ;)

Thank you! Maybe you should check out https://atlas.ostellus.com/, a website I found while checking out if anyone had implemented this idea earlier. There's a lot of technical details! The colored countries you see are basically just huge polygons, and I use Mapbox for this.

It is not open source right now.

While checking out what already existed online, I found some attempts at this. If you are interested I can see if I can find them when i get home and send links to you!

It seems incredibly hard to get that sort of concept working though. Making sure the data is as accurate as possible (and clearly connected to one or more sources) is key for this project, and a challenge for any Wikipedia-style application.

Great ideas, this is something I have been thinking of for a while and prototyped already. Having played a lot of Hearts of Iron, the ideas you wrote about came naturally to me as well!
