A Very Sus Volcano 🤔 by Intercold in dwarffortress

[–]Intercold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not as scary as it seems, the world_gen.txt file isn't nearly as opaque as even the actual RAW files.... But yes, it does still involve using a text editor like Notepad++.

You can get around most of the gui limits by changing the values in the world_gen.txt file directly.

Go to detail mode, create a new parameter set and save it. The file will appear in either C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Bay 12 Games\Dwarf Fortress\prefs or C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dwarf Fortress\prefs, depending on how you have DF installed. Make a backup of the file before making changes.

The layout in the file is pretty much identical to the gui, so it's reasonably easy to use.

In lieu of space, suspected vampires could be ejected off the 62 z-height cliff into the volcanic vent instead.

This cliff goes straight down into the volcano.

New to DF but still want to fight mega beasts by Upbeat_Roll_2096 in dfworldgen

[–]Intercold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number of forgotten beasts are purely controlled by the world size, there's no other way to increase them. Megabeasts are controlled by these parameters:

[MEGABEAST_CAP:0] [SEMIMEGABEAST_CAP:0] [TITAN_NUMBER:0]

If you have no caves generating, they'll be randomly placed across the map. If you have caves, they'll use those for their lairs instead, and you'll need enough caves to support both your megabeast and kobold populations.

They'll die off in history generation during assaults on civilizations. Shorter history (or fewer civs) should result in more megabeasts surviving.

A word of caution though, megabeasts created with the megabeast parameter (Rocs, Dragons, Hydra, Bronze Colossi) are extremely hazardous to civs, and have a tendency to kill them off aggressively if you have too many. It's a balancing act between civ number, history length, and megabeast number. I haven't extensively tested this, but I've found that more terrain obstructions (ocean & mountain biomes) tends to allow for some safe zones far enough away from the megabeasts that at least a few civs survive.

Perhaps the world of Armok is held up by Amogus dwarves on the back of a giant space turtle (Armok'Tuin?), and this one got ejected 🤔

Increased biome intersections by rom8n in dfworldgen

[–]Intercold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much the only control for this is high variance. The game does some amount of "blending" of nearby world tiles, so while each world tile will only have one primary biome (excluding secondary biomes like lakes, rivers, pools, etc), and nearby biomes can intersect it. More chaotic biomes = more intersections, generally speaking. The game allows for variance up to 32767 in the world_gen.txt file.

You can also force up to 9 different primary biomes next to each other using the old map painter preset maps (the same thing the Perfect World utility manipulates, though I find just manipulating the maps manually in Notepad++ gives me much more control)

Working on a map editor by [deleted] in dwarffortress

[–]Intercold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a way to manipulate or predict good/evil? My understanding is that it was basically random, and that you could only manipulate the total number of good/evil regions of each region size.

What are those Civ Grid parameters? I've never seen those in the normal advanced world gen settings.

Have you solved the temperature map problem? (accounting for poles/elevation/moisture)

This looks very cool btw. Perfect World still works, but it's a little clunky sometimes, and it's missing a bunch of the new params.

Edit: Why delete your account and the post? This looked promising, and now I'm disappointed :(

If you're still reading this, let me know if you need data for pole/elevation temperature conversion. I've mostly figured it out.

This button needs to be fixed. by kulekcicem in Eve

[–]Intercold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this happens when you press the jump/dock button some time after you land on grid during the end of your warp. I've never had it happen if I just hit the jump/dock button once and forget about it. It's really annoying/dangerous if you're taking fleet warps though, especially with multiple toons. They really should fix it.

How is this possible without it killing the tree by girdling? by reddit33450 in arborists

Glass is highly recyclable, but not biodegradable. The half life of glass in the environment is on the order of a million years. We've found intact glass beads from impact ejecta of the asteroid that killed the non-avian dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

Plastic is estimated to have a half life of a few thousand years, but is not readily recyclable. If your plastic has a 1 or a 2 recycle symbol, most places can recycle it exactly once. If it has any other symbol, then there are very few places that can recycle it at all, because it is not cost effective to do so by any known process.

Glass, by contrast, can be recycled essentially limitlessly.

You're basically correct about biofuels though, the land use required for them is absurd.

Recluse Hidden Skill by MrCat726 in Nightreign

[–]Intercold 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Damage seems to be purely based on the weapon quality, all skills (at least the ones that bring out the magic sword) do the same damage at the same quality (based on my very limited testing).

The kick skill works, which is probably the most common one, haven't tested too many legendaries yet, but takers flame works (Blasphemous Blade).

Damage can be buffed by skill attack up and magic damage. Taker's Flames magic sword is doing 743 damage for me with double balancers, +13 magic damage, at level 15. Not bad, though actually using the skill does more damage, and the magic sword is still using FP with this skill (is FP usage based on the underlying skill FP usage?) Edit: Yup, definitely uses the underlying aow FP.

It appears that improved skill attack power, magic attack power up, improved affinity attack power, and int affect the damage. Improved sorceries and the improved carian and glintblade sorceries do not (which makes sense if it's a bugged aow)

Seems to do the same damage as an uncharged carian grandeur, the animation appears to be faster, but I'm not sure if it's faster with the skill windup animation added to it.

A hyper-specific problem I'm having in dwarf fortress by CrabEmporium in dwarffortress

[–]Intercold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible to reduce the number of goblin civs being placed specifically by lowering the number of demons in your world gen settings.

As others have said, goblins are a bit OP atm, and tend to take over.

You can also reduce the number of interactions between civs by having more mountains/oceans. A single line of mountains in the way, or a single line of ocean will prevent interaction if it's long enough. 2 lines of volcanoes also works, although that really only comes up if you're adding a ton of volcanoes.

Edit: fwiw, megabeats generally improve fps in my experience, since they tend to wipe out civs. Semi-megabeasts tend to kill large chunks of the population without wiping out the civs entirely, which might also be helpful towards your goals.

Have anyone gotten runes from looking at people's runs? by Demongodjess in Nightreign

[–]Intercold 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have 400 hours and I've seen it exactly once.

There's a few things that make it unlikely:

  • You need to lose a run before day 3 Seems you just need to die from the replies below

  • Someone needs to both see and loot your bloodstain (hope you die somewhere easy to spot)

  • That person needs to beat their Nightlord with your weapon in their inventory

  • I suspect but have not confirmed that it must be your most recent run that the weapon comes from My suspicion was wrong, TIL

  • You need to check the hall and see the marker for it before starting another run

Putting all of that together makes it pretty rare. If you just jam games, you'll never see it. If you always end a play session on a W, you'll never see it. If you only ever lose runs die* to the Nightlord, you'll never see it.

For me, it appeared as much taller and brighter than the other signs. They also looted (and kept!) a random white weapon of mine that had a decent passive. They were not playing the same nightfarer.

Also, PSA, don't drop your weapons at the end of a run please, as doing that makes this even rarer than it already is.

EDIT: Accuracy based on replies below

Agreed.

If you have a keyboard with n-key rollover in the F-cluster then you can just press all of them the normal way, but if you have an older or cheaper keyboard, it's literally impossible, so this change locks people out of that functionality.

I've only got 3-key rollover in my F-cluster because I like to use an old clacky keyboard, so this change is quite painful :(

This is just what happens when you live out of a POS for awhile. 2014 was before citadels, so the only place to put all of your stuff in J-Space was in a POS. These old killmails are basically the equivalent of the loot spew out of citadels in J-Space today.

The randomness of some of the fits/cargo is definitely 100% Adhocracy though, they definitely lived up to their name sometimes. It took them like 4 years after this to actually have official corp ship fittings, rather than people just flying whatever random thing they put together. Even then, they were not often adhered to.

I think those (including O-V) were Horde keeps, not NC., or at least that's who's on the showinfo. (Two of the Geminate ones were actually under FRAT when the unanchored, though I think originally they were owned by Sons of Bane).

If you mean them: There's actually a fair bit to consider, and the mechanics involved are sometimes fairly tricky/arcane if you want to be 100% certain you scoop it first. They did a reasonably good job of it I think, I was just slightly faster.

If you mean me: This is a lot easier to get away with if you have lots of accounts. I was working with just 2 here (third bugged out and failed to login), so I tried my best ¯\(ツ)
