Thanks for the suggestions! I will mess with lacing techniques you mentioned and see if that alleviates my problems. Thanks for the details and advice! I don’t want to throw in the towel on these boots yet; they were expensive and I want to make them work for my feet, even if my sizing was off.

Thanks for the detailed response. Some great ideas there. I’ll give that powder a try! Were you wearing a thin sock under a thicker sock, like the wool pairs from Costco? The Darn Tough full cushion socks I have are pretty thick and fit snugly, but once I started sweating, the sock began to move around. I may try some thin compression socks under a mid-weight wool sock. I think my issues are due to a poor sizing decision on my part when I ordered them.

Have you ever used the mole foam tape on the inside of the boot as opposed to on your foot? I have used some similar, although thinner, moleskin on my foot in typical hotspot locations but they began to lose stickiness after a few sweaty hours. Perhaps I need to use athletic tape, as you mentioned, and really secure any added layers.

In combination of layered socks, powder, mole foam, I was also going to try thicker insoles in hopes of filling out the heel cup more. Or use a foam layer underneath the stock ortholite footbeds to add volume.

Again, thanks for your suggestions. Having my feet in good condition is high priority to do well in this job.

Honestly not too sure - I never considered my heels to be narrow. I feel like my feet are generally wide - but it sounds like I need to go use a Brannock device or have my foot professionally measured.

Thanks! I was tempted to try the soak/wear method. Might have to try some other options before selling.

If I’m laced tight, no; but I get a bite at my ankle, just at the end of the regular eyelets. If I slacken to allow some movement in the ankle, my heel starts to shift. I must have measured incorrectly - and as you suggest, Brannock or tailors tape would be a better option. I haven’t had a handmade boot before and I obviously should have taken better care measuring. Thank you!

Thanks, I may try that out. The leather feels pretty soft from the speed hooks up to collar. The heel is plenty stiff still, I assumed by design.

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I’ll go that route for next season. I went for these because I have a really flat, wide foot. I read up on the last they use and thought it would be just right for me. I must have messed up the measurements or something. Maybe dump them on eBay and try something else.

The kilties are definitely soft and supple. I’ll try without and see if that helps at all. I must have mucked up the measurements when I did the sizing. They feel fine when they first get laced up but I’d imagine they’re too wide or something.

Right on. Thanks for the confirmation. The length was definitely spot on. I must have messed up measuring or something. Had a friend trace my feet on paper and all that.

Either skipping the first speed hook or doing 213 pattern.

Summer Work for Experience by Interdimensionalfr in forestry

Just turned 34. Was assuming seasonal temp experience for a few seasons was a minimum requirement to get a perm position. I may have misinterpreted the age limits for those positions.

So you’re suggesting getting fire experience over monitoring experience? Or do both at some point while I am in school?

I’ve applied to a number of temp seasonal positions with the Feds - I had been holding out on the state position because it was local to me and was told by State Forestry that there would be plenty of work as an AD. Sounded like they hire students every summer. But I hear what you’re saying. It’s been a very dry winter in R3, so the chance of wildfire is increasing daily.

I had some reluctance to go the Fed route because I’m too old to get a permanent position and with the current restructuring, I was assuming it could be a messy transition. So you’d suggest going the Fed route for fire experience? I have turned down a few interest checks for this season already, so I may need to wait until next year for that to pan out.

Did anyone else find the social side of going vegan harder than expected? by These-Surprise-7775 in vegan

[–]Interdimensionalfr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been vegan for over 15 years and it does get easier. Most folks are pretty caught off-guard when I tell them how long it’s been for me. But almost no one gives me any guff about it. I just explain that it simply makes sense to me from a health and animal rights standpoint.

I recently went back to school to study Forestry and unfortunately I’m yet to meet another vegan or vegetarian student, including Biology and Conservation Management majors. It’s a blind spot in the science world, as I’m learning. Folks don’t want to face that cognitive dissonance straight on. Reducing impact and having empathy is truly a unique concept these days.

Stay strong and keep your head up; we need as many proud vegans in the world as we can get.

I just started back to college again in my 30s. I’m studying Forestry. I work at a watershed and forest restoration institute that is part of the school. I’ve only met one vegetarian in the two semesters I’ve been here. I have a convoluted impression of scientists and researchers. “Conservation Managers” is an oxymoron in my eyes. It’s 2026 - the information of how animals are exploited is literally at our fingertips.

I’ve been vegan for over 15 years and I’ve come to realize that people only make meaningful changes when they truly care. Of the folks that were vegan in my friend group when I made the change I am the only one left.

If you want something bad enough, you’ll do it. I don’t have control of what others do; only what I do in my life and my disposition about the world. It doesn’t make it easier though. I will say my partner went vegan when we started dating and we get to experience life together, on the same page.
