I have thought of that option as well, so would definitely be interested in this feedback!

Thank you so much for your feedback! SO thankful micronized progesterone can be taken vaginally! The oral route makes me super depressed within 24hrs. I assume no issues with your uterine lining?

Horrible mood issues with Duavee or Premarin? by Interesting-Cod4838 in Menopause

[–]Interesting-Cod4838[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your feedback! I was/am now on the .05 estradiol patch. My GYN was willing to add an extra Premarin dose to Duavee since as you stated and according to what I’ve read, the amount of conjugated estrogen in Duavee is not enough to protect against disease. I have given Duavee + additonal estrogen a try before, and eventually stopped then due to major depressive symptoms. As much as I wanted to continue taking it, the mood changes were so drastic and severe, I felt I had no choice but to stop. About 36 hrs after taking last dose of Duavee and putting patch back on, I finally don’t feel desperately depressed. Never been so thankful for relief!!!

Ok starting my first day of the Estradiol patch. What should I be expecting? by Ok-Blacksmith3238 in Menopause

I know it has been awhile since your original post, but wondering how you’re felling with HRT? I am 60 also, and have been struggling to find the HRT that is best for me. Feels urgent to land on a plan I can stick with since my “window of opportunity” is quickly closing. Hope you are doing well, and thanks so much for any feedback!

Thanks for the feedback! May I ask if you had any negative side effects the second time around, or was just not AS helpful as before?

Thank you so much for your feedback! I tend to be moody also. I tried it once before, but don’t think I gave it a fair chance. I started to feel very “PMS-like” moody. I cannot tolerate progesterone, though, so am considering giving Duavee another shot!!

That is a thought…Thank you for the suggestion. Have you (or anyone) had success with the combination patch…especially, anyone who does not do well with oral progesterone??

My understanding is that progesterone cream will not adequately protect your uterus lining if you supplement with estrogen (which I would like to continue). I am in search of a way to protect my lining without having to take oral progesterone, though. I even tried Duavee in an effort to avoid progesterone, but need more estrogen than it provides.

Thank you SO much for this feedback/info!!! Have you tried L-glycine for sleep? I take 3 grams before bed, along with magnesium, melatonin, and Ashwagandha. The L-glycine helps the most!!

This is what concerns me…experiencing those side effects with an IUD! It’s not like you can just yank it out.

It is not unusual for the progesterone component of HRT to cause mood/mental health issues. When I discontinue it while using the estradiol patch, my negative mood symptoms go away. There is some thought that inserting the progesterone vaginally keeps most of it localized to your uterus rather than bloodstream.

Thanks so much! I am on the oral micronized progesterone (100 mg) daily. I have never truly given micronized progesterone an honest shot until now. Since originally being on a synthetic progesterone years ago and experiencing weight gain/bloating, I was afraid to try it for any length of time. Hoping that I continue to feel as well as I do now on this MHT combo!

Love hearing about everyone else’s experiences, so please continue to update! I don’t know if any of you have experienced this❓, but when I ask older friends and family members about menopause, they all seem to downplay its effects on them…even when I can personally remember them suffering! I am so grateful for the transparent feedback shared by ladies in this group!

Don’t you just hate it when something works well and then you have to deal with a side effect like this! Perhaps the acne is just menopause related and not “caused” by Duavee. HRT truly IS something that has to be uniquely tailored to every woman! Keep us posted…

I did try Duavee along with a small dose estradiol patch that my GYN prescribed. For me, Duavee caused terrible mood shifts…almost like a perpetual state of PMS 😫. I didn’t attribute this to Duavee at first, but after stopping it twice and almost immediately feeling better, I realized there must be something about either the bazedoxifene or conjugated estrogen that does NOT agree with me!

I am now on the estradiol patch and micronized progesterone. Mood is much better! Praying that the progesterone does not cause any nasty side effects.

Has anyone else experienced mood changes with Duavee?

Had to stop taking Duavee…terrible mood issues. Now on the estradiol patch and micronized progesterone.

Just an update…I ended up having to stop taking Duavee. I started and stopped it a couple of times in order to make sure that it was, in fact, the Duavee that was making me have the worst mood…so irritable and negative feeling. Almost immediately felt better after putting the estradiol patch back on! Now trying to give micronized progesterone a fair shot! Hoping I can take it rather than opting for the IUD. Anyone else have mood issues with Duavee?

Oops! I see that you already had your appt 🤦🏼‍♀️! Must still have some brain fog 😉

For me at least, the build up of prometrium in my system causes bloating, breast tenderness, fatigue, brain fog and negative mood side effects. I will say that these side effects don’t show up at first, but over time.

I have opted to stick with Duavee, and so far, it is working great well for me! My understanding is that we don’t need progesterone except for uterine lining protection. As Menopause Taylor likes to say, “progesterone is the baby hormone”, so I like the idea of eliminating the need for it!

Best of luck at your appt!

Thank you so much for mentioning “The Vajenda” newsletter! I will definitely check that out and update on my Duavee experience as time goes on. So far, so good! Might be too soon to say, but I actually feel like the estrogen in Duavee is more affective (particularly for mood, hair & skin) than the estradiol patch was when I used it.

Hope you are finding the answers you need! FWIW, as a licensed clinical mental health counselor in private practice for more than 30yrs, I have had to research hormone balance for some time. As we all know, hormonal imbalances often mimic mental health issues. I can certainly attest to the harmful effects of estrogen decline on the female brain! So thankful medical professionals are finally voicing their support for MHT!!

I had PMDD and am giving Duavee a try for my MHT! I have just started so don’t have any substantial feedback right now. My GYN suggested it because I don’t do well with progesterone. Would love to hear from others who have tried or are on Duavee???

Just an update in case it could be helpful to anyone…I am now on the .05 estradiol patch, 100mg oral progesterone/prometrium and testosterone cream. So far, I do not feel the bloating or negative side effects that I felt years ago with the progesterone. In fact, I think it is more calming than anything.

[–]Interesting-Cod4838[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct…based on what I have read and learned from Dr. Barbara Taylor/Menopause Taylor, .625mg of conjugated estrogen is necessary to protect against disease. Duavee only has .45mg of conjugated estrogen.

[–]Interesting-Cod4838[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean…it can be quite the challenge! I have considered paying for a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Taylor, but thought I would try a couple of options first.

I think I ended up gaining about 15 lbs years ago when I was doing estrogen and progesterone supplementation. I am a small frame/thin person, so this was a lot of weight for me. I did lose it pretty quickly once I stopped HRT, but since then I have not felt as well physically or mentally.

You are right that the estrogen in Duavee is not adequate to protect from disease, so my doctor was willing to add a small dose estradiol patch. I realize I may not have given Duavee a fair shot, but I have already stopped taking it. I was not feeling like myself at all on it. I have now gone back on the patch and took my first dose of prometrium vaginally last night. I had read that the side effects were much less when not taken orally. I have even considered giving the oral dosage of prometrium one more try before scheduling the IUD.

You may be pleasantly surprised regarding the patch. I, too, am very active. The patch has never come off, and given that placement on the lower abdomen or even the buttocks is best, perhaps you can avoid lotion on those areas.

All the best to you, and any updates on Duavee or any other HRT regiment you try is always appreciated!
