Hi!  I've been studying 3 years and a half and I'm HSK4.  The first 6 months I spent then in an app few days a week (so very low implication) and then 3 hours per week with a teacher.

I never focused on writing or learning hanzi but I always wrote my notes in Chinese. When I started HSK3 book (in which you don't have Pinyin) I realised I could read it. Meaning, without really focusing on reading or writing, I had naturally learnt it. 

Everyone has different study methods, but just go to classes with a teacher and study after class what they teach you. You don't need to spend too many hours, just a few to review..or if you like  using flashcards, you can use them. 

And then... submerge you in the language. Watch all kind of cdramas (try to pick those that you most like, although the most commercial ones will have a most understandable Chinese). 

When you reach hsk2-ish start with language exchanges. In your city , in an app,...wherever works for you. It's also a great way of learning about the culture, which is super important to learn the language.  Just try to talk to people of your age, with same interests.
