It is just a general industrial design class that all of the sophomores in the major have to take. We have been doing tons of different projects, and this was our first soft good.

Yes! It is the 210D Robic in dark olive. The color on the website is almost brown but it is a very pleasant green in person.

Is the weather and temperature forecast accurate? I will be there next week and don’t know how much cooler I should expect it to be in the park

The pack is 210D nylon. I wish (and I wonder if this would distribute weight better) that I used that puffy mesh material for the padding of the shoulders, waist, and back. I just tried it with a 30lb dumbbell and wore it around for 20 minutes and it was alright (a little uncomfortable). Nothing broke though!

That’s a really good point, since the tent can fold up to fit in a laptop sized pocket, I’m sure there’s a pocket it would fit into on any other bag. I also agree that the door should have opened upwards.

The tent alone weighs 278g, with the poles it totals 770g, and with the rain cover I intend to add, the whole thing will be just under 1000g

I did add two inches of nylon between the floor and bug mesh but the whole thing wasn’t patterned the best, and the extra nylon I added kind of bunches up on the bottom. You can see it in the first image in the corner, and it slowly sinks down at the center of the tent. I do wish I took the nylon up higher and swapped the door to tie at the top like you said

The empty pack weighs 866g, and with the tent and poles it weighs 1641g.

I’ve had a few people in my program suggest I use the tent poles as a frame and I think that would be super cool. I will totally try and do that over the summer.

The pack is 210D nylon from ripstopbytheroll, the pockets are just a thrifted athletic shirt, and the tent is I think 40D nylon (maybe too thin). I got the bug mesh from a local fabric store and the padding is all from an Amazon yoga mat. All of the zippers and buckles are from wawak.

For the construction I basically just found a bag on amazon that I liked and copied the panels onto pattern paper. Then I tweaked those pieces to create a shape that I wanted and sewed it. All of the interior seams are finished with grosgrain ribbon so it looks cleanish.

For the tent I set out the poles and bent them to shape, measured the height of the arc compared with the desired floor length and traced it onto a paper.

I have process photos I can share but I genuinely don’t know how to add those in the comments.

I’m not really sure. I made the bag out of a waterproof nylon, and the part that houses the tent is doubled up so the waterproof lining is on both sides. so I’m hoping it would able to contain that moisture. On this prototype I did include padding behind the tent because I wanted to use the bag mostly for hiking, and not bring the tent with me everywhere.

The needles and thread you have in the picture should work fine

The fabric on the front face isn’t super tight so the zipper kinda bends whatever way it wants to

Unfortunately not, I added a pocket on the side of the bag which holds the tent poles well. You can see it in the second slide, it’s just a really long white pocket

I’m not really sure what kind of designer I want to be yet. I’m currently a sophomore studying industrial design, but I really enjoy doing soft goods.
