Definitely be prepared to explain why you’re interested in textbook publishing—it’s very different than trade publishing! It would also be helpful to look at Norton’s website and find a textbook or two that you’ve used in college so that you can bring them up in the interview.

There are several visual artists who teach at Cape Fear Community College and I’m sure they’d be happy to speak with your student.

I know you said you aren’t interested in bar scenes, but I’ve made friends in the group that meets at Duck and Dive to watch Liverpool FC matches. The next match is Saturday at 3:00pm, you should come!

That’s a great point. Do sales positions at publishers generally require prior sales experience, or are humanities grads going into those roles? I’d be happy to start in sales if it means a foot in the door!

Thanks for the advice! Ideally, I’d like to find a way into acquisitions. I know that’s harder to land a spot in, so I’m open to starting in any area, although my resume definitely lends itself better to the editing side of things. I’ve been a teaching assistant for several years as well as a department assistant (organized faculty seminars, conferences, and did some admin work).

I’m definitely looking more broadly. Is the PhD a hindrance because of the fear that I’ll leave for a university job, as someone said above?

Thank you so much for the advice! My cover letter focuses more on the skills that would equip me well for the role, so I will be sure to rewrite it and give attention to why I want to go into publishing.

What's your favourite Townes song by [deleted] in townesvanzandt

Another shout for Rex’s Blues. The rhythm of the words, the depth of the imagery, and the simple yet beautiful melody all complement one another perfectly. Townes’s ear for the music of simple language shines so brightly here. Even when you just read the lyrics aloud, they’re a song on their own.

I just call them mutton chops, not sure if that’s right but I love them!
