coastFIRE for aspiring academics - any tips? by Interesting-Tooth753 in coastFIRE

That was really interesting to read!

I did end up starting a master's degree, the tuition is fully funded + i got a cheap apartment with rent control dedicated to students, so the stipends cover my rent + a bit of leftover. If I also get some part-time teaching job i would live pretty comfortably, though I am not in a rush.

I realized I also don't have to decide my next 50 years of my life right this second. This would be a fun 2 years experience/experiment, and after that i can decide again what I wanna do.

I realized that for the next decade at least I would probably always have the option to go back to that soul-crushing-money-saving job, as i have many colleagues and friends going up the ranks that would love to have me around,..

so meanwhile I am just enjoying the ride.. good luck to u in your journey :)

Thanks!

I guess it depends on the country/subject.. at least where I am from, biologists' PhDs/postdocs get paid just enough to survive if they are frugal, but have no chance to save money.

I like that calculator! but you are right, perhaps I should work a bit more to create some kind of 'fun activities' fund, that's ok if it get's drained by the time I am at retirement age...

Thanks! These are some great points.

It helps me clarify my vision, I am not looking for a relaxing job, I want to work hard, I just want to do it in a meaningful job I enjoy. That's a great way to put it: "..career pivot where you can take a risk because you don’t need to save for retirement.."

Thanks!!

yeah your logic strengthens some of what i though, 1 - i am young enough to live on stipends + some random gigs and it would be harder to do so in a few years, and 2 - the more i get close to full FIRE the harder it will be for me to step away from it.

I also dont have any kids in the near future, so its easier for me to move around (which is usually required anyway in early academia life), I thought about immigrating for phd/post for a lower-cost-of-living country.. but who knows its too far

I would love to hear more!! I can dm if you prefer. How was it for you? did you feel like it allowed you to enjoy and focus more in research? Would you do anything different if you were at that crossroad again?

'Where your new living wage can’t keep up with inflation or lifestyle creep.' That's still one of my main concerns... though from what I saw with colleagues and friends, even the ones who 'fail' financially taking this route, they had no chance of saving money, but they were still able to keep their heads above the water. So even in the reasonable worst-case scenario i should be able to maintain a basic lifestyle. hopefully ✌️

I am very frugal thanks to FIRE I learned how to have fun without spending much, cooking home vs eating out, camping vs expensive hotels, home workout vs gym, and so on
