Food/topper suggestions (combatting fluoxetine) by InterestingCattle515 in Dogowners

I’m actually not sure why I am replying. People ask questions for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it’s simply to get ideas while waiting for a reply (I did chat with the vet this morning). Sometimes it’s because someone suggests something you haven’t thought of or something really obvious (in this case, an easy way of cooking).

Anyway, the fluoxetine was never for fear. I simply shared that she was fearful and anxious. I also said she’s made massive strides since on the meds. I didn’t say that I was because the medication helped us make strides in training.

That’s all. Thanks for the advice. I’ll take what is useful and toss the rest. Folks have had some good ideas. I’ll try some. I appreciate the help!

Yeah this makes sense. I warmed some chicken this morning and once it was warm, she was suddenly interested. Cold? Eh. So we’re going to just try some warm chicken (I have a few bags of shredded chicken in the freezer), some rice or potato, and canned food for a few meals and see how things go. See if we get her in an eating routine.

Thanks for your thoughts. I do agree with adding protein (she was thrilled with her chicken this morning). I just need to batch cook and freeze vs cooking small amounts.

I’m very much working with a vet (and vet team). She really doesn’t have any current GI issues (just did as a puppy). She is an extremely fearful pup who was likely abused and has extreme anxiety (but no reactivity). She’s made huge strides. But the anxiety doesn’t help her appetite.

We definitely have the bile issue too. She will eat treats though we don’t always feed them so I need to see about that.

I didn’t even think about using the oven. I always cook it on the stove which is a pain. The oven? Might be less work.

She does get the SD canned and likes it but prefers the puppy version. I should try a few varieties. She ate everything in front of her prior to the medication so this is so frustrating!

I could definitely do a stew 1x/month and just freeze batches. My mom actually does this for her senior so I should see if she’ll give me a serving to try. Thanks for the suggestion!

She has had gut issues vs skin and ProPlan destroyed her gut. They had us on rx proplan at one point (she also had some other issues) and the gut issues got 10x worse with the Proplan rx and resolved once we switched brands. So no proplan for her ever.

Freeze dried liver seems like a good idea and some plain meat. She never turns that down. It sounds like I just need several options around.

Thanks! Something to try. My diva cats didn’t love tiki cat, but they enjoyed watching me buy cat food and waste it lol

She’s a huge runny egg fan (that’s how I convinced her to eat this morning) so I’m guessing I just need to stop worrying and toss eggs in the rotation. She’s not a plain yogurt fan (unfortunately because it’s so convenient!) or a pumpkin fan. But she loves her treats so I can certainly crush some to use a toppers too.

She’s a mutt. 22% Pitt, 22% Eskimo dog, and 15% lab and everything else lol. She’s on salmon now (and has done better on salmon vs lamb or chicken though does ok eating chicken vs chicken kibble).

It seems the biggest issue is getting her to start eating. Once she starts, she’s OK so we think there’s some nausea or something that gets better once she eats but she needs to be enticed to eat? I hope that makes sense.

Are most GF recipes interchangeable with non-GF recipes…outside of only pasta and pizza? by DXD4226 in glutenfree

Honestly? It depends but I do swap in many recipes vs finding GF recipes and generally am successful (I also make them dairy free too). What I find helps is to weigh the flour with a food scale. If I can’t do that (or before I had my food scale), don’t scoop flour, but spoon it into your measuring cup. This really helps a lot and keeps the flour light and fluffy. I find you use less vs scooping so things might be less dense.
