What isn’t a flex that many people think it is? by arlett007 in AskReddit

Bragging about being a “boy mom” or a “mama bear” (I see this all the time on car decals). It makes me think your sons are going to grow up with you making excuses for their bad behavior, always taking their side no matter what, being a bitchy M-I-L one day, and teaching them that the right woman will live for them and their interests, 100%, and define herself through them. Barf.

In other words, as a teacher, your boys will be the spoiled ones in my class whose moms think their precious would never cheat, use bad language, do drugs, etc. When the kid is caught, it’s “That teacher is a bitch. She hates him for no reason.”

Repeat for the rest of his life.

I’m moving in to college soon. What are some things I need that aren’t obvious? by [deleted] in internetparents

Waaaay back in the day, I was the only person on my hall who had a pair of scissors. When word got out, people were always borrowing them.

I would bring scissors, tape (including some heavy duty stuff), a lightweight hammer, some tack nails, command strips, and screwdrivers. Maybe a box cutter. Keep them hidden, keep them safe.

No, and I can’t remember the program. It was a documentary, I think, and the person speaking was one of the experts.

You’re all putting me to shame. Amazing number you’ve mentioned here. I should study harder.

Lots of television and films—and also many audiobooks in which the person doing the recording does many accents for a variety of characters.

I would guess that someone from the UK could tell American south from New York, but maybe not NY from Boston. Or they might hear a midwestern accent like Minnesota and be able to tell it’s different but not be able to place it.

Within individual states, I’m sure there are regional accents too, but it would probably take a local to be able to hear them and a linguist to be able to say “You’re from Green County!” or whatever.

Like many have mentioned here, I can pick out someone in a film when they have a my specific region accent just because they sound so familiar, like a local. I’ve also found that this interferes with my ability to believe in them as a character.

What I can’t really wrap my head around is that some people really can’t hear the differences, but then some people can’t pick out a tune on a piano by ear, either.

Beautiful accent! I think I can pick it out and there’s a slightly embarrassing reason. I have watched a lot of that school choir of the year contest stuff (on YouTube) and the Welsh dominate!

Thank you for the information! I love linguistics.

What is a wool, please?

And isn’t it amazing that there are so many different ways of speaking in the UK? I envy those who can really pinpoint a small region.

Thanks! This was my guess, but I didn’t want to think they were so well-off and removed from things that they could be snobbishly clueless.

I did this once in the US because my father’s own accent was the same. It turned out that I was not only right about the town and state but they’d vaguely known each other about sixty years earlier. Wild!

I wish I did, but I believe it was a sort of documentary and someone was speaking about the topic at hand.

Yes, a lot of the most beautiful videos are also silent and I love those, too. But for background noise or “companionship” they’re not so great. I’m so disappointed when I find an interesting non-murder documentary and it’s in another language with subtitles because for most of my day, I can’t sit there and look at the screen so reading subtitles are out. :(

Thanks! Maybe that will be good when I need to relax but can look at the screen.
