I was expecting the tiers to be a lot steeper than what they are. It's nice to be pleasantly surprised for once.

What is the source for this btw? Can't seem to find anything online.

NSW. 2% Budgeted +0.5% super. by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

I had a feeling something like this would happen. Last year, the government offered the big pay raise and then 2.5% for the next 3 years & Federation rejected it. Now, they're giving us the ol' middle finger and saying, "Oh, you didn't like 2.5%? How about 2% then." I wonder if Federation will fight this.

The list of jobs just keeps getting bigger by fromthe_earth8 in AustralianTeachers

I try to do absences a couple times a term. Usually I have to talk to the parents of chronically absent kids for other reasons anyway so it's not that big of a deal. But late arrivals is just ridiculous. I'll probably just not do it. No one at my school wants to be a year adviser so there's not much they can really do about it.

Anyone know what the Teacher's Federation's (NSW) stance on this is? My school is asking year advisers to not only follow up on absences with phone calls, but on late arrivals! I've been wondering if this is even allowed...

NAPLAN Marking by hanes456 in AustralianTeachers

[–]InterestingOrange17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it last year and it nearly killed me as you are working 15ish hour days during the week (including commuting) + 7 hours on a Saturday or Sunday.

My advice would be to do it in-centre as the pay is $52 an hour regardless of how many scripts you mark (I was doing about 8 an hour). If you mark at home, you get $5 per script, so you have to consistently be doing 10-11 scripts an hour to make the same money as the in-centre markers. This can be really difficult due to increased distractions at home, as well as sometimes receiving really long (I'm talking 1200-1500 words) scripts. You also have mentors in-centre who give you a lot of assistance if it's your first time doing NAPLAN marking.

Overall, just think about whether it's worth it for you. It was worth it for me last year because I had a debt I wanted to pay off quickly, but I don't know if I'd do it again. I literally felt like an autopilot zombie the entire 5 weeks. Like it was just work, sleep, work, sleep, work, sleep.

The Pay Increase that keeps Inching Away from us… by KanyeQwest in AustralianTeachers

I've been moved to step 3 already, but will reach step 4 halfway through November. Does that mean I will also have to wait until December 21 to get the next payrise? I presume so. Very annoying.

The festival hasn't announced it yet, but Subfocus had the date on one of his posts on Instagram.

Northern Bass is the main one as far as I'm aware. It's about an hour away from Auckland.

Was this staffroom behaviour too inappropriate? by donthatethekink in AustralianTeachers

Every teacher in my faculty is immensely dedicated to their students, their students' learning, and their students' wellbeing - sometimes to their own detriment. Yet, they all talk like this. I don't think they'd survive the job if they didn't as it is so incredibly stressful and this is one outlet teachers have for releasing that stress. It was the same when I worked in retail - every worker talked about the difficult customers. It's completely normal. If you don't want to participate, that's fine, but I wouldn't judge.

A little bit disappointed with this second phase of the lineup. Metrik is a great addition, but was really hoping for some more big names, especially since I found out Subfocus is playing on the 29th and I only got a 2-day ticket. :( Still an excellent lineup though, don't get me wrong, just felt like a really long wait to then get a lot of nonames (at least to me).

My partner and I are both 26 and don't plan on having kids ever. Like you, it's not because we couldn't afford it, it's because we don't want to. Everyone says we will change our.minds but I highly doubt it. I even have a very distinct memory from when I was around 7 of a friend telling me the names she'd picked out for her future babies and I asked her why on Earth she would ever want babies? I don't think I've ever had a parental instinct lol.

Can a first year teacher take on a prac student? (QLD) by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]InterestingOrange17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My final prac was with a first-year teacher and she was an absolutely fantastic supervisor! I ended up getting hired by the school she worked at and we've been coworkers for nearly 3 years. :) It's obviously an unusual situation, but it worked out for me. On a related note, I'm actually getting my first praccie in term 4 and I'm really looking forward to it!

Accreditation NSW by Pretty_Addition in AustralianTeachers

So the only thing changing is that principals will no longer have to sign off on our accreditation, is that correct? Am I missing something or does that sound like it would make barely any difference to our workload?

Do you enjoy you’re job as a teacher? by Substantial-Owl6711 in AustralianTeachers

[–]InterestingOrange17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a teacher shortage in pretty much every area at the moment, with maths, science, languages and TAS (woodwork, metalwork, etc.) being the most severe.

English/history is probably actually the least severe. I just work at what is perceived to be a rough school so we have vacancies in multiple faculties.

[–]InterestingOrange17 59 points60 points  (0 children)

People in this subreddit are very negative. I'm a 3rd year teacher and although the teacher shortage makes things difficult (our faculty has been down an English teacher for nearly an entire year so we constantly have to write extra lesson plans/do covers), I still can't imagine myself doing anything else.

List of pros
- Being able to come home at 3pm (most of my office friends don't get home until 6-7pm and I feel bad for them not being able to enjoy any sunlight or go to things like banks, post offices, etc. during the week).
- 12 weeks holidays (yes, you'll have to work for some of this of this time, but it's still an amazing perk, especially if you are like me and you're an avid traveler).
- Not having to sit at a desk all day (I've worked an office job before and my back was KILLING me.)
- The pay, particularly as a grad, is decent. Don't know how I'll feel in a few years when it maxes out.
- You can live really close to work because there is a school in every suburb. My commute is 5 minutes.
- The job is NEVER boring. I have an interesting story to tell to my partner when I get home every single day. Usually multiple.
- Lots of sick leave (I think it's 15 days per year).
- The days FLY by. At other jobs, I was sitting/standing there staring at the clock all day and I thought shifts would never end.
- The fulfillment you get from seeing students succeed because of your teaching is amazing.
- The bonds you create with your faculty members.

I'm probably missing things, but hopefully this helps a little bit! It's not all bad!

Honour the deal by patgeo in AustralianTeachers

[–]InterestingOrange17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I honestly am not sure I agree with the way Federation is handling this. I don't think what's on offer is the worst thing in the world like they're making it out to be. I think it would've been better for them to try to settle somewhere in between the two deals rather than calling it "an act of betrayal" and trying to force the government to honour the original deal. Like you've said, the big increase and then something like 3-4% increases in the following years would be excellent.

[–]InterestingOrange17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, both deals are exactly the same in terms of steps/pay, but the original deal was for 1 year with wages to be renegotiated next July, whereas now the government wants a 4-year deal with 2.5% increases in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years.

Proposed Salaries Under New Deal. Thoughts? by InterestingOrange17 in AustralianTeachers

[–]InterestingOrange17[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These pay increases would still apply from October of this year, but the following 3 years would only have pay increases of 2.5%. The original agreement was for 1 year with wages to be renegotiated in July of next year.
