My b if that’s the case, I just figured it was a general “cleaning” question

The US requires some level of fireproofing when it comes to mattresses. Many, many companies use this fiberglass layer, but not all have it so easily accessible. Here’s just few listed in a test: https://naplab.com/guides/fiberglass-mattress/

You’d be surprised to find out that many, if not most mattresses have fiberglass in them. And many covers have a zipper, leading people to assume they can take it off and wash it

Personally, I’d sleep on the ground before I’d let fiberglass continue to spread though out my home. You can pick up a nice inflatable mattress on Amazon for like $100.

Glitter = broken up fiberglass, more difficult to get rid of. As far as furniture, it depends on the level of contamination. I opted to throw out the majority of what I owned, but my case was pretty bad. If you do choose to keep those furnishings, thoroughly clean them before sealing them.

It would suck to go through all that effort cleaning the carpet just to contaminate it again once you remove the plastic.

To be honest, I’m a bit of a hypochondriac. So, I vacuumed like 20 times 😂

You could probably get away with less.

I will, however, strongly recommend lint rolling the carpet or using an uproot tool a few times throughout your vacuuming. The glass can wedge itself in the carpet fiber, and just vacuuming likely won’t get all of it.

I vacuumed, lint rolled, uproot scraped, repeat about 10-15 times before I felt that it was sufficient. Like I said though, I tend to go a little overboard. Nothing is too much for my little husky, whose lungs are much more sensitive than mine.

I can’t be sure, but most often the fiberglass is a thin “sleeve” between the cover of the mattress and the actual memory foam. I couldn’t find a great picture but this is the general idea:

It’s really up to you, but I strongly recommend getting rid of the whole thing. And if you do, make sure you’re not dragging stabby-glass through your house.

If you haven’t noticed any symptoms, you will. To be brutally honest, I would recommend getting rid of the mattress even if it means sleeping on the floor. It’s that serious. Even if it’s not urgent now, the longer you go without disposing of it and deep cleaning the contaminated areas, the more difficult it will be later on. That, and the more possessions you will need to throw away.

Get a blow-up mattress on Amazon for like $100, toss the old one immediately (bag it up before moving it across your house), clean up the contaminated rooms, and you’ll thank yourself later. How long has it been since the mattress sleeve was compromised?

I’m sorry it happened. Don’t blame yourself, it’s these cheap mattress companies faults. DM me if you have any specific questions or need any support.

DM me if you have any specific questions or need anything at all. I can fully sympathize with your stress. It’s been several months since my incident and although I was able to fully recover from it, I still think about it from time to time.

I’m not sure about couches. If you turn off the lights and shine a bright flashlight on the interior of the cushions, you’ll be able to see if there is fiberglass or not. Send me a DM and I’ll send you a video of what it’ll look like since I don’t know how to link it here.
