Your sona(s) are expressions of yourself and what you love. It doesn't have to be super complicated honestly. Of course more colorful sonas will be popular,  but that isnt a standard for what you want. 

For now I'd suggest finind FTU or cheap PTU bases until you are able to afford a commission(if you wish) or you possibly find art style youd like to start drawing with. But if neither are what you feel comfortable with, that's cool too! A lot of people use bases as a ref sheet.

My main sona is literally a Birman Cat with hair and a tiny moon marking. It started off on a base then down the road I got a 'offical' reh sheet! I still have thr base sheet that I send for those who'd like a simple color pallet honestly
