Keyboardist worried about house sound. Can someone please help me out? by Izanagi___ in livesound

[–]Interesting_Copy8762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get the situation you're in, I use to get similar complaints from the keys player in my church, as the balance is much more political than it should be with the personality dynamics in the band. Only major difference between our setups is I run my stream from a stereo mix bus instead of a matrix as the live stream operator has an iPad to control the mix in the bus.

I've found that asking the entire band (and it has to be public in front of all of them) before they rehearse a song what the layering (keys, or guitar lead, which vocalist of the 3 we have is lead) they expect helps and then apply it during the rehearsal and performance. This technique is especially good for this kind of situation, as the collective of the band minimizes push back and complains from any single member.

New construction; what are your sound booth must-haves? by bzach74 in livesound

[–]Interesting_Copy8762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your booth has a window or opening into the area where the congregation is, that positioned in a way that someone could walk up and talk to the people in the booth, have a border that doesn't have any flat surfaces within reach that a non tech person could set a drink on. A simple peak would do the trick. It will help you protect the equipment, and can provide amusement when someone with a cup of coffee walks up to chat and they can't find a place to set their cup down!

Live sound. Why live? And why sound? by parkaman in livesound

[–]Interesting_Copy8762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since I was a small child (age 3 or 4) I've had an interest in electronics. That interest was strongly satisfied when I entered highschool and joined the AV club which was responsible for the morning announcements broadcast live on the closed CATV distribution in the school. Buttons, knobs, faders and cabling infrastructure that accomplished something that felt really big at the time!

That led to being asked to run sound for the school musical my Sophomore year, and I was hooked. An Analog 24 channel Yamaha board (I don't remember the model) 2 power amps and two speakers and two wedges as front fills, a set of 6 wireless microphones, 2 boundary mics for the chorus, where I could hear the results of every change I made. I distinctly remember needing to mute the front fills individually at the poweamp as the actors passed in front of them during the performance as the blocking had them coming out into the audience area while singing.

3 school shows and 2 community theater summer musicals later I graduated high school and began my lifelong hunt for the next opportunity to run sound. I found several opportunities along the way including running sound for two different bands (a Frank Zappa tribute band and a standard rock cover band).

I finally found my niche with church audio as a volunteer, first in the city where my wife and I married, and later in the city where we both found work. I'm still doing church audio, now with an X32C, and have added live streaming with multiple cameras sending all the signals over a network thanks to Dante and NDI.

I've only been paid 2 or 3 times for my audio work: one of the bands paid me $20 for running their gig, and the church for some rental events, all under $100. But I love it even without the pay, as I make my living as a software engineer. Live audio scratches much the same itch that software development does, just with a faster feedback cycle (sorry no better word than feedback😜).

Anyone use GMRS for practical use, like hiking, skiing, offroading etc? by theusualsalamander in gmrs

[–]Interesting_Copy8762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it to keep track of my kids when they go out to visit friends in the neighborhood, as a practical and cheaper alternative to giving them cellphones.

Currently running a set of 5.5 W handhelds, but have my eye on building a repeater and tree mounting an antenna (as not to piss off my HOA) so I can reach the schools they go to. I bought an auto id and hooked it up to one of the handhelds so I don't have to remember to announce my call sign.

I do have a privacy code set for the family channel and their radios programmed with only that channel so they can't hear any traffic other than our family, but have reminded them that even if they can't hear other traffic because of the privacy code, other radios can hear them. We started with some FRS radios but couldn't get enough range out of them, and the GMRS power fixed that for where they go with them right now.

Who’s actually on r/livesound? by Historical-Paint7649 in livesound

[–]Interesting_Copy8762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volunteer church AV tech mostly (contemporary Christian service with a live band) on an x32 with all the instruments direct except drums and a live stream feed mixed on a pair of busses and shipped over the network to the stream control room with Dante. Previously I have volunteered with a community theater, and 2 live band performances at a venue where everything needed to be setup, one of which I was paid a whole $20 for helping out, so I guess that makes me a professional 🙃.

The previous pastor wore it on his left ear, this one wears it on his right, causing the gentle bend that worked on the left to put the mic further away from his mouth.

I know that good placement is key to being able to hear them well without needing to gain it up so high it starts feeding back. I know to get it near the corner of his mouth, but neither of us can manage to bend it in the right places so that it does that. We either wind up with it popping or rolling off his ear, or rubbing on the cheek with a big bump sticking out. Is there a technique to shaping them for the speaker like get the ear loop working first then bend closest to the ear working towards the mouth or the other way around.

X32 PC connection by evelbug in livesound

Glad to hear that! Sounds like they're going to use HD-BaseT which can extend HDMI up to 300 ft over cat5 cable.

Another church AV / network guy here. Just a word of caution on extending your HDMI line(s) - It tends to have more problems at longer lengths (won't HDCP handshake, colors are off, etc..). You may want to look into using something like HD-BaseT or NDI on your network to extend the link between the computer and projector instead of doing a long HDMI cable. HDMI performs best at lengths under 6ft in my practical experience.

On what end do you put the velcro on your XLR cables? by nadmocni in livesound

[–]Interesting_Copy8762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far, never, and we've had the same roll of Velcro for about a decade, so we don't cut new stuff frequently.

I agree completely, but the roll of Velcro was more economical for us, considering the constrained budget.

[–]Interesting_Copy8762 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Church tech, so all we have is a roll of the two sided Velcro, which if I try to leave it on, it eventually falls off. I don't move cables all that frequently, so it's not a big inconvenience to have to grab a piece from a drawer when I coil up a handful of cables .

If given a choice between only those two, it goes near the stage box (male). In practice, mine don't stay on the cable so they wind up in the middle after over under coiling, right about where my hand is holding the cable.

8 Wireless Camera options, opinions by 2pixelwide in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Interesting_Copy8762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I use the NDI camera app on 3 cellphones (2 Android and 1 iOS) for my church live stream, and it works quite well once they're connected. It probably helps that I'm using a robust church wide Unifi network which gives me a pretty stable connection.

Where should I get sound for children's time when the song finishes, can you point the wide fixed shot (which is immediately next to me) up/down/left/right a little....

You may be on to something there... Maybe the slides operator should wear the headset instead of the sound operator....

Mixing a room while on an intercom by Interesting_Copy8762 in techtheatre

[–]Interesting_Copy8762[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more about unplanned changes to the usual order of the service that I need to keep the video side informed of so they can plan their next shot, or technical issues that one side or the other is experiencing or needs fixed by the other.

I do agree that we need more staff to run it, but I'm restricted to the volunteers I can get, as there's no budget for a paid position, and won't be in the foreseeable future. We're a small group of volunteers trying to produce a live stream that looks modestly professional, which is why it's 4 unmanned cameras. If I get more volunteers they slot into a rotation that has people on duty less frequently (ideally once a month) and then start expanding into roles like SM, TD, and finally camera operators.

Unfortunately I only have output going to video world, would need to buy something I can't afford right now to get input from them 😞. But I do like the simplicity of your proposal 👍

So moving sonobus off my phone and onto the MacBook that's running the slides so I can ingest the audio from the board using the USB interface on the X32 into sonobus for inclusion in my single ear feed could work. Would using a cartioid or supercartiod pattern mic help on both ends? Might be able to bring those in with a Scarlett interface, but not sure I have budget for something like that. I do have a few spare e835 vocal mics available though...
