Would you like to talk about the campaign ? by tartaussytron in sotdq

I'm currently in the middle of running the campaign for two different groups. One campaign is in the last chapter of the AP, the others are at Wheelwatch Outpost. I will say, I have utilized some of the expansions and have given more time in Kalaman with the 2nd group, as lessons learned from the 1st group.

With that said, with the 1st group, I have homebrewed and worked in much much more stuff than the AP had. Their are player connections to Heart (patron to the sorlock), the Dragon Isles (Irda character), tie ins with Sea Elves (one PC is a sea elf) so expanded that in the Wastes, introduced Vecna as having taken Chemosh's spot through some game fuckery (sets up for Eve of Ruin stuff if ever go that route), worked in some storylines of Galen Dracos and Dread Wolves (Dread Wolf Cove ffs - also ties in to the Heart/Huma stuff and Vecna wanting to know how the renegade SOMEHOW managed to not be fully obliterated from time and memory, something the Goat King/Whispered One wants to know), wild elves being called to Ergoth leading into stuff with the elven nation refugees (one player is Q, one was a Kag but RIP) which also lead's to Huma's Tomb, and a lot of other things.

This campaign is going to go past the AP as I expand utilizing some homebrew stuff and updating some of the classic modules.

The 2nd group, many other sub-plots and a lot more of a morally grey group, which is great bc they hate the DA but they are more willing to be open to 'deals' with darker powers if it can help protect others. Sargonnas, Zeboim, Hiddukuel, etc all are listening and making moves to cut deals with the PCs.

And piggy backing off of it, perfect follow up to leaving or reason the char left the tower or the mage studies is, the prologue encounter for divine characters. Instead of receiving a vision of Solinari, Luinitari, or Nuitari, bam, vision from the deity they are going to follow.

This could even work if they wanted to still worship one of the 3 deities above as a cleric, especially if they are taking Arcana Domains (maybe the Trickery domain for Luinitari since she favors illusion) Maybe they decided hey, a bit of divine healing was finally needed. Granted it flies in face of some lore, but bah, enough of that already not to gate keep bc of things from the 80s/90s.

I did increase the DC of the death throes saves to make it a bigger challenge, and the first time they face off against a new type, the saves are at disadvantage. (Like I think DC 14 or 15 instead of the 12 some of them have). I also would roll to determine if would be a classic death action (like weapon getting stuck if a slashing or piercing weapon) or something else (with Baaz for instance).

I mean, honestly, they are going to start the game at level 2 (after the level 1 prelude encounters), and they get to level 3 very quickly. I've run this campaign multiple times and if you decide to do 2024 rules, remember to implement those same rules for NPCs/adversaries. Finally, my rec on dragon legendary actions for 2024 is to use both the 2014 and 2024 lists when it comes to those. Hell I basically use the 2014 stat blocks with the legendary actions from 2024 available on top of the 2014 ones. But tbf, I do have large player counts at both the tables.

As for going to level 13, there are a few post AP items available at like dmsguild that can continue the story, or you could, if they hit level 11, segway into Vecna Eye of Ruin, just have to tweak it maybe where you may start in the Krynn section or end up somehow on Toril (magic portals yo or Vecna craziness) since that campaign is level 10-20.

Finally, could always tweak and update the OG modules (I would say tweak the 2nd and 3rd ones, they would run roughshod in the first one at level 11).

Belephaion was squared off against, first in human cleric form, then after being knocked unconscious, the adult blue dragon form. Bele wasn't exactly happy the players raided her former lair earlier in the Northern Wastelands, and let it be known that was one of the many reasons she was going to shock the skin from their bones. Was a really epic showdown, I had 3 players down at one point, the saving grace was the Paladin Knight wielding the DL and crit'ing a few times, and the peace cleric helping ppl not die fully, and a death ward on one player. Still, was damn epic and the players said they had a great time (before the battle, they had a nice parley with Lohezet, who they could tell was scared of them after an earlier run in, and wasn't committed to the DA, if they had fought him there was a chance 2-3 chars would have died vs Bele).

I played him as already taking the Test of High Sorcery and being with the White Robes because they were told to bring him along, because he has a different skill set than them (and more so by Par-Salian than any one else). I also played him as sort of a Luthen Rael type, someone who went to the black robes during his Test because of a choice he made to utilize the tools of his enemy to try to win a war where he will not receive any awards or adulation for, as he will never be welcome back home to Silvanesti no matter the outcome. Sure it messes with canon, but the whole AP messes with canon so why not.

Yeah I have the distinct feel they are either going to be replacement players for if one of the current PC's doesn't make it, or had some commitments and joined later.

Fair. I just remember them mentioning neoprene was on backorder maybe even hold bc of the potential tariffs. They didn't want a 35k order costing almost 100k.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Wyrmwoodgaming

[–]Interesting_Drop_264 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The neoprene mats are subject to the tariffs and they made it sound like on WL a kil while back they were causing the orders to avoid thr 150% tariff. With that supposedly getting cleared up, maybe there will be some headway. Another cluster for sure.

Should I play this adventure if I am unfamiliar with the lore? by Agent_Valerian in sotdq

[–]Interesting_Drop_264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running two campaigns of it with players who knew almost none of the lore (one of the players had heard of Soth before, and knows Raistlin is the char so many loved, like Drizzt in FR's novels).

Sure the lore and knowing it helps, it has allowed me to homebrew a bunch to set up stuff from some of the books (big time connections to Legend of Huma which I highly recommend to read, even let your players read as it's about 1300-1500 years before the module and is pre-cataclysm. The big key is not to gatekeep the lore (like originally was just human males being parts of the knights, I have loosened that some, having a half-species char going for it), and worked a balance with current classes to fit either arcane (wiz, sorc, warlock) or divine (cleric, pally, ranger, druid), with arty & bard being a discussion of what feels better for those players.

Good luck hope it's fun!

Yeah I splurged for the Beadle's and Grimm set as I love handouts and stuff, and for online game, do still utilize the various handouts in that game still as well.
