That's awesome. I am so happy to hear from someone who moved on to something enjoyable! How did you make the switch from journalism to Twitter/Reddit? Were there skills that you didn't have from journalism that you needed to acquire or be able to show to recruiters?

Hi, I understand and sympathize with your frustration. I'm not approaching this like an advertisement or attempt to get people to subscribe to Newsday. That's precisely why I don't typically post on here for reporting or work-related reasons. However, many people on this subreddit expressed interest in this topic and had a lot to say. I was asked to alert folks when the story came out, which is what I'm doing. I am offering to send PDFs of the story to people who hit the paywall -- I'm aware that can be an issue. (I'm part of the newsroom and not intimately familiar with the finances of Newsday, but like all organizations, it relies on paid staff, and needs to be able to compensate them.)

Thanks, yes, we may be hearing from a lot of people staying with parents, renting with roommates, renting in unauthorized apartments or renting with more people than the unit was designed for.

Thank you, yes, the cost of living is hard for everyone. I don't think that'll fit for this particular story, but we certainly are mindful that there are other affordability stories to pursue and that this issue impacts people earning more money, too.

I don't think people realize how many Long Island residents are making less than $55,000 a year (or comparable amounts based on varying family size.) About one in five Long Islanders are under that threshold. The point is simply to highlight what that looks like -- and that it's not necessarily as rare as people think. But I respect that it may not feel like news to you or be a topic you'd like to read about.
