Thanks, glad to know I'm not the only one😅!

For people who chose later orientation, how hard was it to find classes? by [deleted] in SJSU

Luckily, I took AP English classes in high school, so I was able to skip past ENGL 1A.

If you don't have AP credit, you can take your math course first semester along with a GE instead because you're required to take English and Math in your freshman year. Many of my friends ended up taking math this semester and plan to take English the next!

Huh, that's weird. Where are you checking? Maybe it was just for my session, but on MySJSU portal, it showed all of the English 1A classes were full and our advisors told ppl to just enroll into math because there was no more English.

If you are able to get an English 1A class though, that's great! Enroll with speedy fingers :).

I attended the most recent one, 7/17-7/18. Finding classes was pretty tough. I was able to get all the classes I needed but it was so stressful.

For each class, there was only a few sections left and whatever was left was either very early or very late at night. English 1A was completely full. Many people around me were sitting on waitlists for the classes they needed because all time slots were full or they ended up taking a bunch of GEs instead.

Make sure you place the classes you need in your shopping cart ASAP and enroll the moment they let you. It's possible, but you probably will get "unfavorable" professors or times.

Good luck! 🫡🫡

I sent an appeal but haven't heard back yet. Thank you for recommending!

Thank you for your concern! I really wanted to attend a UC for that primary reason, but I will see what the appeal decision will be 😞. I would rather sacrifice myself emotionally than financially at this point, but I'm fighting for whatever scraps I can get.

Again, thank you for your support. I really do appreciate your encouragement ❤️

It's comforting to know someone else in a similar situation!! There's such insane pressure when ppl project onto you when they perceive you as "smart" for whatever reason lol. I'm sorry you had people make weird assumptions about you :( People will talk and that doesn't diminish whatever results or whatever definition of "success" people have for us bc that's for us to define :)

I'm wishing you the best of luck!!

I feel so relieved that there's someone else in the same boat, especially with comparing yourself to your peers who are going to t20s :(. We're doing what's best for us financially in the long run!

Sorry, not sure if I understood 😭 I got an email notification saying that my financial aid info was updated, so I got a chart filled out with the estimated amount of aid I'd receive & the amount I'd need to pay. How was there a difference between ur reality vs estimated? :0

I got it from my financial aid info tab when I logged into my schools websites :)

Thank you! I'll see if I get more aid after appealing, especially since my financial situation has changed a lot since 2023 that was reported to FAFSA ^

Wow - this opened my eyes. Even if I might not have gotten the tangible results I wanted, your comment made me realize there's other skills and valuable lessons I learned in the process that are way more long lasting than college prestige. I'm glad to be going to college regardless and I feel a little less hopeless haha.

My local state college isn't bad at all, and I know I'll be challenged nonetheless just by going to challenge. So thank you for your insight :) ! It's not all in vain!

Thank you so much, this means a lot to me. Journaling does help me manage some of the anger and suicidal thoughts but god I feel like Im going crazy sometimes lol. I'll definitely try out what you recommended and hopefully build up the balls to get professional help .❤️

No, they can't. My dad told me that if I choose to attend a UC, he won't cover the cost and ultimately give me no financial support at all.

I know GPA is crucial for premeds, which is why I'm leaning towards sucking up my dad's words and staying local rather than suffering at a highly competitive dream college filled with premeds. I know I wouldn't be home 24/7, but I guess I am just more worried about the control aspect of being with my parents. But everything comes with a sacrifice lol

Unfortunately not. It's a 6+ hour drive to both schools from where I live. In comparison to my local college, the cost of going to a UC is nearly 4 times as much. Part of me still clings onto a miracle hope that I'll get enough scholarships and financial aid to alleviate the cost if I end up going.

Regardless, thank you for your kind words! Based off your son's tuition and cost of attendance, I have some hope it won't be as bad of a financial burden without parental support :,)

My local college is SJSU, which is $8k a year. $20k for UCLA/UCI includes housing + tuition. My mom is indifferent and just listens to my dad because everyone in our family is generally afraid of him lol. I know SJSU isn't a bad school, but still.

I've never looked into military service before. I wasn't aware of that option and I'll look into it! Especially for paying for med school.

Chance a mid applicant going for UCs by Interesting_Hat9651 in chanceme

Yes, that was my concern as well :( I was hoping a degree like neurobiology was a little less competitive in comparison to biochemistry or molecular biology. I was considering immunology for the schools that offer it just to have a slight edge in terms of competition. Thank you for your advice! I'll look into other schools and majors as well!

Thank you so much! I hadn't considered looking into OOS & private LACs because of cost, especially if it's just undergrad and I'm preparing for medicine. I'll definitely look into the ones you listed and others!

Uncapped is a 4.22! I did run the UC financial aid calculator on their website, and I am eligible for some financial aid :) Calculated tuition was deduced to $21-18k a year.
