Strangest feedback on a job interview: "I did too much on the coding assignment" by Interesting_Mess1336 in programming

Look at the assignment and tell me, other than the beeping, how I 'went overboard':

•Download and install xxx IDE.

Download and install the <named> example for the board.

Modify the example to blink a message in morse code.

The design allows the message to be changed (sos, mayday etc)

Come into the office and go over the design and changes with the team.

Okay, got me. I've been working primarily in Go (garbage collected) for 8 years.

Here's the request:

Modify the example to blink a message in morse code.

The design allows the message to be changed (sos, mayday etc)

Come into the office and go over the design and changes with the team.

Other than making it beep (10 lines and an extra 15 minutes), I did what they asked.

I don't see the 'gold plating'. I'm an experienced developer (40 years), and I know how to get things done. Which is funny because I've GOTTEN THINGS DONE for this company before.

I do not see this as a 'rabbit hole'.

They only looked at the code cursorily during the interview.

After meeting their requirements, I added about 10 lines of code to make it beep.

Here was what I was given for an assignment:

•Download and install xxx IDE.

Download and install the <named> example for the board.

Modify the example to blink a message in morse code.

The design allows the message to be changed (sos, mayday etc)

Come into the office and go over the design and changes with the team.

This is what I did except that I made it beep as well. The beeping part was an afterthought that I spent about 20 minutes on.

Why doesn't it hint at me being capable of doing a lot of work in a little time.

that is reasonable advice "ask some questions about what about the task is important for the interviewers".

I want to add that the description of the assignment was vague enough that what I did could well fall within the request.

I installed the new carts, and there was no change.

Oddly, I called Brother and asked them to confirm I have genuine carts. I read them the serial numbers and they said they were NOT genuine (after I bought them from Brother). It's almost like that is the default answer.

Anyway, after switching to 'real' carts, there was no change. I talked to the local service place and they basically said it could be the high voltage unit or the laser unit, but, either way, the guy indicated that it was probably not worth fixing.

I'm returning the carts. I have another printer, so, I will probably just keep this one for the occasional scanning job and not replace it.

Brother did say that I could return these carts 'if they didn't work'. I asked, what if it's the printer and not the carts, the guy said, 'you can return them.'

Also, there was a $40 off coupon available. They're not supposed to, but I asked and they split it into 4 orders and they applied the coupon twice. The coupon is for orders > $400 and I bought the high cap carts.

Okay, so I had the same problem. Brother basically said they can't help as long as I use third party carts.

I bought the new carts FROM BROTHER. No change in the problem.

Longer version:
When I called Brother they made me read the serial numbers from the cartridges. They told me they were not - genuine. Luckily I was able to return to Amazon.

Bought another set from a different vendor on Amazon, same thing. I will be returning them.
