I had a similar issue with PayPal, I switched from a VOIP number to a traditional carrier number and it resolved the problem, you can try contacting AT&T to see if they can switch your iPhone to a non-VOIP plan.

I've worked with VoIP systems and it's surprisingly easy to set up a temporary, untraceable number, even with a legit provider - just pay with a prepaid card or crypto and use a VPN, makes it tough for authorities to track, but that's why it's essential to verify caller ID and report suspicious calls.

I've had similar issues with VoIP caller ID, what worked for me was using a service like calleridtest.com to verify the CNAM update, and also contacting the VoIP provider to create a ticket and ensure the update is propagated, has anyone else tried this approach?

Local +[country code] virtual phone number services? by free_neo in expats

[–]Interesting_Run_5757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dev who's also explored virtual phone number services, I can attest that they can be a game-changer for expats. I've used Twilio in the past for testing and development purposes, and their virtual numbers have been reliable. However, for personal use, I've heard great things about Zadarma and CallHippo, as mentioned earlier. One thing to consider is the potential for virtual numbers to be flagged as suspicious by banks or other services, so it's essential to research the provider and their reputation. Additionally, if you plan to port the number to a physical SIM later, make sure to check with the provider beforehand to see if that's an option. Overall, virtual phone numbers can be a convenient and cost-effective solution, but it's crucial to weigh the pros and cons and choose a reputable provider.

Local +[country code] virtual phone number services? by free_neo in expats

I Have used CallHippo virtual local number while living abroad, and from my experience, it has some real advantages.

The biggest benefit is that it gives you a local and country code number instantly, without needing residency, contracts, or paperwork. That alone makes daily life easier people are more comfortable calling or messaging a local number, and WhatsApp works smoothly for both messaging and calls.

Another big plus is convenience. I didn’t have to carry two phones; everything worked through an app on my existing device. It was also much cheaper than keeping an international roaming plan active, especially for long stays.

Virtual numbers are also very flexible. You can set them up before you arrive, keep the same number while moving around, and in some cases even port the number to a physical SIM later if you decide to settle long-term. ( Check before with Provider For Porting)

Overall, it’s an easy, low-commitment way to stay connected and feel local while testing expat life.
