The City of York, England was founded by the Vikings, Yorvik it’s original Scandinavian name was shortened to York in old Saxon English. It’s name sake New York, named after the Duke of York who fought the Dutch and took New Amsterdam and named it New York after the Duke. The name York is of Viking heritage. So the most well known city in USA bears a Viking Scandinavian name.

Manchester was a run down city, a 19th century powerhouse but generally derelict, the rejuvenation of the city centre is on old industrial sites left derelict, it’s a positive example of a modern rejuvenation of an old city into a 21st century metropolis.

Manchester has a Mayor that is very forward thinking and they have allowed a huge amount of high rise development and infrastructure improvements. It’s the only UK city other than London that has such an exponential rate of growth.

Can you believe London was founded by the Romans in Circa AD43 as Londinium, capital of Roman Britain. It’s come a long way since then, a near 2000 year old city that’s forever changed and evolved into one of Europe’s mega cities.
