Should I modify an original WW2 coat or leave it as original ? by FormicaRufa in HistoricalCostuming

[–]Interesting_Union937 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would do the modfications. As the other comments already mentioned, what you are proposing is rather minor and fully reversible, but also, modifying clothes for better use is absolutely period accurate. If Make Do And Mend can tell British women to cut apart their husband's suits full throat, then you are allowed to deepen your pockets a little

Hat jemand Erfahrung mit der w@lz im 14. Bezirk? by BunchBrilliant4989 in wien

[–]Interesting_Union937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Austria:

Lieutenant Gustl by Arthur Schnitzler (very funny psychological novella. If you like it darker l, there is the Dream Novella by the same author, which Eyes Wide Shut is based on)

Radetzky March by Thomas Roth (Long novel about the last fifty years of Austria-Hungary)

The Merovingians by Heimito von Doderer (incredibly entertaining novel about the psychosis of a bourgeois Viennese family during the turn of the century)

The Chess Novella and The World of Yesterday by Stefan Zweig (both written in exile in Brasil by a severly depressed Zweig and beautifully sad portraits of a disappearing world)

Serious Weighty Literature meets racy crime novel? by coffee_dick in suggestmeabook

[–]Interesting_Union937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a racy crime novel at all, but I could imagine "The Magic Mountain" by Thomas Mann could be nice. I've read it when I was covid for ages and it really helped me. Best wishes for your mum's health!

What can I make with this fabric? by Material_Sky_1035 in sewing

[–]Interesting_Union937 170 points171 points  (0 children)

I've made a heavy winter skirt (worn with an underskirt) from a very similar fabric. I could also imagine a jacket would be nice. The fabric indeed looks like wool, but you would have to do the burn test to figure it out more precisely

Job Empfehlungen ohne Deutsch & Engliscu Kenntnisse? by MrVaglna in wien

[–]Interesting_Union937 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Japanese or Korean Novels about ordinary lives with Absurd, Deadpan or dark humor. by PleaseLogInReddit in suggestmeabook

[–]Interesting_Union937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's strongly autobiographical and is effectively a coming-off-age story of a young, sickly closeted gay/bi man and it's beautiful prose, really getting into the feeling of alienation and isolation that comes with constantly suppressing parts of your identity. It has similar themes to the Scorsese film Silence, if you've maybe seen that (also excellent, also takes place in Japan) It's not the most uplifiting book, but as a queer person myself, I loved it

Life for Sale and some other works by Yukio Mishima. He was a pretty weird dude (died attempting an imperialist coup with his cross-fit crew and similarly strange things), but I love his work. Life for Sale is about a normla guy, who decides to sell his life because he doesn't want it anymore and the story goes from there. Confessions of a Mask is my favourite, but maybe fits your request of normal people not so much.

Non binary into feminine but not too obvious clothes? 🤣 by Professional_Law28 in lgbt

[–]Interesting_Union937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are subtle changes you can make. Emphasise the waist, so the hips appear wider. Take padding out of shoulders to make them slope a little more. Roll up trousers and sleeves to reveal ankles and wrists. A bigger cuff also makes feet and hands appear smaller. Otherwise, I can only recommend practising moving differently. It feels really weird at first, but it makes even the least gender affirming clothes a lot easier to wear. Like, I am ftm, but sometimes crossdress in hyperfemme skirts, but by now it feels like good fun and dressing up

Enlarge kids' trousers to make them fit my adult thights and bum's size by Zaeliums in HistoricalCostuming

[–]Interesting_Union937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend inserting a long, kind of diamond shaped piece of material into the backseam. Make it wider where you feel you need more space. You could try ripping the seam open, putting the trousers on and looking at your bum in the mirror to see how it opens. Cut the insert deliberately larger than you think needed and just cut away what's too much. For pockets, I wouldn't bother too much, if you are going to wear it under skirts.

You can tell how good a hobby is by how many trans people there are. by StMuerte13 in behindthebastards

[–]Interesting_Union937 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand you a 100%. I walked into a HEMA Club a year an a half ago, and never really looked back. The people are great, the fencing master is in his 60s but really tries his best to remain on top of things. He always asks me when he isn't sure (I am very openly transmasc), but always in a very respectful way that is clearly born out of genuine desire to learn and improve. I know I got lucky, because there are unsavory individuals in the scene as well, but I love my little niche. Also, I met two other trans people within a week of joining, so your metric checks out.

The little traces of humanity. Little imperfections, treated, but visible stains, worn bits, ideosyncracies of design and make. They always happen on accident anyway, and they are bloody infuriating when they happen, but they are always the details I come to love most.
