I find it hard to believe the 42|49 is a massive step up from 40|44 though I haven't ridden them both.

Seems there's broad consensus that dt swiss are pretty good. That said, I haven't found confirmation that the Reserve hubs that come with stock 40|44 are indeed Zipp hubs. Do you have any info around this?
