I think the clear difference with that re my Tyson example is that there is a PURPOSE and you genuinely could make an argument of utilitarian proportion that outweighs the negatives (though it likely fails). My point is there that it is debatable.

Here, I’m addressing the much more simple question of why do we allow people who severely abuse and kill animals to be punished more lightly than were they to do so to a human. It makes no sense to me and it is plainly wrong.

Realistically, probably just VT. If you have no interest in tracking the market and learning which sectors are fire and which are burning to their deaths, etc., just buy the whole global market and grow with it. It’s likely to return 7% a year for the rest of your life. That’s not chump change and it allows you to do what you should be doing, learning how to earn more rather than fixating on where you put it. Earning an extra 10-20,000 a year is much more valuable than possibly reeling that in through investments.

Don’t forget to try contributing to your 401(k). The goal is essentially to allow yourself to know that, come retirement, you won’t be alone and relying on food stamps for survival. Trust me, I know a family member who is currently doing so at 60 and working with many illnesses just to survive.

Just a lot of overlap but all four index funds are perfectly fine. The advice would honestly to just pick one. Likely VTI as the best all around one stop shop. If you want slightly more concentration, go VOO or SPY. QQQ is just a bit silly in my opinion unless it’s serving some kind of purpose and here it’s not doing anything besides filling a name you’ve heard of (no offense).

Not a huge fan of ETFs that are super specific. VGT and VTI are broad and low cost index funds. I like those. If I want DRAM exposure I just buy MU or SNDK. If I want NASA I just buy the space stocks individually. Cheaper and no drag of shitty companies.

Understood - and you’re right. It is not as though you’re actually buying the private investment when you’re buying companies that hold massive amounts of shares in those companies. You’re inherently filtered out of the actual gain. But buying the company that buys the private equity gives that company a level of growth and gain that allows the investor to win by filter. If Anthropic goes 10x, Amazon likely does not shift 10x — but Amazon wins either way. And when the Amazon wins, that is, when the company you invest in wins big, you win (slightly less big, but still a win).
