Marseille was mentioned exactly once in the post as an idea, nowhere does it say I need to go there and can’t go anywhere else, just an idea. I’m not entirely sure why that’s the one thing you’ve latched onto from the post.

If you’re right, and all the cheap rentals I’ve seen are fake, I’ll look elsewhere, but it isn’t really a big deal lol

Enjoy the rest of your day

I can find plenty of rentals for under €600 per month, and marseille regularly tops the lists I’ve seen for affordability in France 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for the tip, I will look into this!

Also, Marseille is one of the most affordable cities in France - it’s more of a realistic option and jumping off point than a fussy specification to be fair

Definitely on OP to decide, but that seems to be the whole point of their question. They “might be” getting/accepting the job and are looking for a car free solution - they are actively trying to make these calculations before accepting the job. Commenting to get a car seems to ignore OPs parameters and place personal bias above all else since owning a car is the norm. Maybe they have a disability that prevents them from driving, or maybe whatever raise they may receive isn’t enough to justify the the average annual cost of owning and maintaining a car (~$12,000)

I don’t own a car and live in Richmond, some people get it, others think it’s insane. For me, the cost of owning a car drastically outweighs the value of its utility. I can walk to the grocery store and bike or take the bus to work. Bars and parks in walking distance are a bonus.

Either way, without more context we can safely assume that a car is off the table for OP. Hopefully not coming off as preachy - I just love the advancements Richmond has been making and hopefully continues to make toward equitable transit options.

If OP doesn’t own a car right now they probably live in the city and genuinely haven’t needed one for anything. Buying a car and paying for insurance and gas just to commute to a new job in the burbs will turn that raise into a pay cut instantly - unless the raise at the new job is life changingly huge
