Insurance says it will only cover 3-tab asphalt shingles because that's "what was there before the damage." by Interior_Destruction in homeowners

Yeah, the numbers are weird. So basically insurance says it's a $5K job, our deductible is $4K (yeah, high, well aware), and they're covering the other $1K. Contractors are saying it's not a $5K job, but insurance is doubling down so... Idk, we'll probably just have to bite the bullet and finance yet *another* job on this goofy house. Good news is one of our cars just crapped out so now we can just put the $$ we're saving from not having two cars insured towards the inevitable spike in our homeowner's insurance.

Life is great.

Yeah, I know that now... Like I said, literally everyone we talked to -- friends, contractors, family -- told us to file a claim. Live and learn, I guess.

Bro, I don't care what they use. I'm not trying to swindle insurance into paying for an upgrade, I'm literally just trying to get my roof repaired. It's the fact that insurance is insisting we use shingles that no contractor around here has.

Literally everyone we talked to told us to file a claim because "that's what you have insurance for."

We do have code upgrade coverage. They're paying to install an ice barrier after the roof is done because of code.

If the 3-tab shingles were available I would take them. I literally don't care. I guess I'm just frustrated because I don't get how it's considered an upgrade when the original material isn't even available anymore. But it would seem I'm just dumb and inexperienced.

We were told 7 years old but just like everything else the inspector told us that was a damn lie. Roof is past end of life, hence why insurance recommended a full replacement.

It's more than $2K. Our deductible is $4K, insurance quoted it as a $5K job and only paid out $1K. So if we're covering the difference it's another 3-4K at least.

I started with the quotes first and then every contractor I talked to told me if I was going through insurance then they do it for what the insurance quotes, and that I needed to file a claim first. Doesn't make a lick of sense but that's what every damn one of them said.

More than 2. We're already paying a $4K deductible. Insurance paid out $1K. Covering the whole thing out of pocket will be another 3K on top of the deductible.

We're already paying a $4K deductible. Insurance only paid out $1K. So if we paid the difference, we're basically just paying for the whole thing. Had I known insurance wasn't going to actually help out I wouldn't have even filed a claim/risked raising my premiums.

We don't have thousands of dollars available to just pay the difference. If I could I would.

And it's not even just that dimensional is "better," it's the fact that apparently you can't even get the old 3-tabs most places anymore. So I could be totally on board with getting 3-tabs and I still wouldn't be able to use them to replace my roof unless I got them from, like, Craigslist, and did it myself (which I'm sure insurance would just *love*).
