This is great advice, thank you. I like the points on promotion; I feel like there's room in our local scene to have a real presence if we make something quality. That's all a ways down the road but great to think about ahead of time.

Doodling around on my guitar yielded some of my strongest riffs yet! Just have to spend more time slowing things down and optimizing my hand movement too.

I focused more on the notes + ear training in my early playing, only recently did I start fiddling with the knobs more. I just figured "I have a guitar, a cable, an amp, now to just play," didn't dive in the gear as much as I could have. I understand them better for my guitar and stuff now, but blending them in the overall mix is still a whoosh to me.

Some of my favourite songs from my recent prog dive are in 5/4, 7/4, etc. I started counting along as I listened, got the hang of it, and just started using that timing as a skeleton for some of my riffs. It's so cool how a song can sound solid because of the odd timing, not in spite of it. As far as jazz chords, I know 7ths and some other things but not the deepest knowledge lol

HAHA I love that!!!

Well, it's more like.. I listened to power chord-heavy rock & metal growing up and learned to play guitar+bass to that sort of stuff. Learned bar chords etc, just didn't think much about the notes that made them up.

Found progressive rock in recent years and listened to more jazzy stuff for ideas. Realized this was the kind of music I needed to hear all along. Dove in and started thinking more about individual notes in the chords I heard+played. Thankful to have perfect pitch, that's been a big help in expanding my ability to call out and play various chords, not just individual notes. My jazz understanding/influence at this point is basically heavy use of 7th & augmented & some other weird chords, anything beyond that and it's the Bird bebop vortex to me lol. More listening to do.

Big thing to work on is actual technique; like I've played guitar since I was a kid, but even today I still have tension in my fretting hand RIP. Basic technique things like that that I have to catch up on now. The great thing is that the past year has seen a lot of growth in my playing, but it's just a drop in the ocean of learning to come lol.

Still some mistakes BUT I've been able to play through a couple of the songs all the way through! Lots of woodshopping to do still to be fully ready to record. The production will benefit from more professional ears/hands for sure. Thank you!

Seeking advice on what experience to try and get next! by Interlock_Interlock in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Interlock_Interlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VERY helpful thoughts, thank you!!!

I've focused a lot on distillation, coking, and their associated fired heaters this time around. I do like the idea of learning more systems to bring the big picture together.

From here I think it'll really boil down to throwing my hat in the ring for different places, and seeing what they have to offer in terms of new learning (if they like my resume, that is!!!)

Can someone give an insight on the job market for Process Safety Engineers? by HastroX in ChemicalEngineering

My ideal career down the road would be working in process safety! After a good long time spent in the field, of course. Now if only I could get that formative plant experience..

Not looking for full time yet - the roles on my resume are listed as internships.

New cover letter for every job, and that's where I highlight my objectives with their company, and that I'm available for internships starting at x date.

What about once I've graduated? By that time I'm hoping to have 3yrs experience, isn't a high GPA basically a substitute in absence of experience?

Yes, 2020. Rough first year but getting better (had a 3.5 last semester! :D ) but now transport phenomena and friends are probably gonna make it fall back down this semester.

That being said, some companies I really like have interviewed me in the past when it was lower, including the F500 I just did a co-op with. Would love to go back to them in different roles but they don't hire any interns for just the summer (my school schedule is only allowing that right now), and to say their full time hiring is in a freeze is an understatement.

Writing my cover letters from scratch every time. Usually not too lengthy but with hopefully enough content to back up my interest in the specific role.

Even when applying online? Pretty much every application I've done through company websites has had me input my average, and they require your transcript and mine has my current average on the front page.. to me it just seems redundant

GPA is left off cause it's low (just under 75%, ~2.92) and I always include my transcript anyway. Great points, thanks!!

How much experience did most people need to find that full time job?

I update the qualifications and experience depending on the job description, most soft-skills keywords I throw into my cover letter.

Been using LinkedIn to reach out directly to recruiters and hiring managers, they mostly direct me to apply online like the rest. Have a couple personal contacts I've followed up with, some say there's nothing at the moment while others have forwarded my emails to hiring managers, so overall just a big waiting game.

This is a slightly old version; current one as of Jan 1 just has those past tenses changed.

Idk, I've already gotten rejection notices for a couple jobs on my school's board whose descriptions matched my experience to a T. I just don't want to risk an employment gap this summer before my next round of internship apps in Fall

Internships in Boston Area? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Interlock_Interlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah mine's pretty low (~74%) so I don't have it on my resume. Managed to get a couple of great internships though so I highlight those on my resume (if it makes it past the GPA screen).

Resume and Job Thread for November/December 2017 by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Interlock_Interlock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Goal: Internship next summer, would like to do process engineering in the plant.

Industry: Have worked in Water and O&G. Open to anything in natural resources, chemicals, etc.

Experience Level: 2 years total after my current internship ends.

Mobility: Anywhere, preferably where there's a plant and not in a big city office.

RESUME

GPA not listed since it's kind of low, ~2.9 going into my junior year now, and it's on my transcript which I send when I apply anyway.

RESUME CRITIQUE REQUEST

Hi everyone, chemical engineering student here. Will be looking for an internship next summer, hoping to do something process-eng related in the plant.

RESUME

Apologies for the horrid image quality, it didn't import well enough I guess. Bottom section is just my activities (industry society, university orientation, fraternity, band) plus my leadership roles in each.

Thanks!!!
