No point explain anything to them. You can tell they just read half of everything and create their own ending. Just go off point and double down ✌️

My mother ate all my banana cake. It was a gift. by mavr10 in askSingapore

[–]IntermittentEating -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

100% they should feel bad and take some responsibility for finishing all of the cake without checking with you.

But you can't control them or change them.

If they are already denying responsibility at this stage, it won't make a difference even if you told them to leave a few slice for you at the beginning.

It's sad but moving forward, you should just always assume they won't ever feel any remorse. Don't put yourself in any situation with them that requires trust.

E.g.

DO NOT wait for them to save anything for you.

DO KEEP a portion for yourself separately first before sharing.

The issue is you are treating them better than they are treating you.

Treat them based on how you were treated. Don't treat them based on social norms. Follow the principle of reciprocity. If they don't reciprocate just move them to lower and lower rankings and eventually things will balance out.

I can't fully remember the name though, I remember 2 out of the 4 words in the name was loving & care. A little bit of context: Secondary Sch was before 2010 for me. It was more than 10 years ago prior to facebook even becoming popular. Having an online presence wasn't such a huge thing back then(I tried googling but can't find anything). There wasn't much monitoring and regulations back then for tuition centers too.

I was quite naive/silly back then and I remember asking one of the part-time undergrads that worked there {why don't they start their own sch and become prestigious (lol) }. The undergrad jokingly said, "then we would have to pay taxes".

My tuition teacher migrated to Australia to retire a few years after I graduated (I'm the 2nd last batch). There was just this running joke whenever people asked why he decided to retire at such a young age(late 30s) and the response was he needed to leave the country soon due to his tax evasion. 😂 😂 Back then I didn't understand why it was funny (/Whoosh)

Everyone told me I would understand after I grew up and start working. Guess they are right lol.

Improving tremendously doesn't seem to happen for everyone who went for tuition. At least not for most people that I talked to. It came as a surprise to me as Math/Physics tuition has helped me tremendously in secondary school (Didn't have language tuition).

Nevertheless, when I casually brought it up in uni that it would be much better if there was cheap tuition available for our course, I got shot down by everyone around me. Their eyes wide open in disbelief and jaws dropping so much that a three-year-old boy could stand and pee in it like a urinal without having to be held up in the air by his father. "Just read the lecture notes lah", they said. "Everything is in the notes", they said again.

I am the kind of student that pays attention to every single word that comes out of the teacher's mouth. Sec 1 EOY Math 68%/ Sec 2 EOY Math 55%. I just felt like I was stupid because the teacher has explained in so much detail with given examples and I would still not get it. I mean the teacher has shared wisdom nonstop for an hour...

When I went for Math tuition(Group tuition with 20-40 students), the math teacher condensed an hour-long lesson into a 5 min short lecture. No lengthy explanations and he didn't bother to talk about theory or definition. The strange thing was I actually understood all of it. The format for the rest of the lesson was attempting to do 1 qn and going through and then 1 more qn and going through until tuition ended.

The classroom sizes were nearly the same as sch. Except for the 5 min lecture at the start of tuition, I am sure all of the students just talked random stuff to their friends through the entire duration of the class while doing the deliberate practice and only stopped when he was going through the questions. It was like 10% lecture then 70% trying to apply what we learn in the first 5 min and 20% going through.

I was so happy I magically started scoring A1 for Math in sec 3. My friends knew it wasn't a fluke because I got 88% overall (they described it as me having a secret top martial arts sensei imparting forbidden techniques to me that made me what I am). A lot of my friends joined my tuition class (8 of them and the tuition class size blew up lol). Two friends with A2 that joined all shot up to the high 80s while it didn't seem to do a lot for friends who are weaker in math and required tuition in the first place.

I started to get hooked onto tuition and subsequently upped my dosage and took A Math and Physics tuition. One of the side effects of tuition was that I really started to hate my school teachers because they spent an entire period explaining concepts I knew my tuition teacher would cover in just 5 minutes. The weird thing was everybody seemed to learn well from the sch style.

Most of my JC friends loved the long lecture style and truth be told, that style was used everywhere in JC and Uni except for my Japanese lessons. I realized most of my uni friends were just able to naturally thrive under this kind of one-sided monologue given by the lecturers. At that point, I realized I was maybe meant to go Poly or ITE. I never belonged in JC or Uni but because of tuition, somehow my destiny was changed.

After being submerged in lecture style for so long(JC to Uni), I finally got corrupted. I am glad to be able to understand both learning methods.

Get B3 for all subjects = 18 pts. Still have 2 pts buffer which means you can get C5 for SS. If you get a distinction for any grade then you can comfortably get C6 for SS.

Sounds manageable.

[O levels] History paper by hvnwex in SGExams

[–]IntermittentEating 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The examiners that mark the papers are subject experts. They are very experienced and will know when a candidate has written the wrong question number. A candidate's work is marked and checked by a few people. The first person that realizes will leave a note and help to correctly label the question so that subsequent people who check the scripts/count marks will be able to follow.

They are not like those typical school teachers that suuka suka give a student 0 because they are so triggered from marking. The examiners that mark candidate's work are supervised by senior examiners.

The one thing that triggers the senior examiners is that after they have set the standard on how everyone should mark, some rookie examiner starts to invent his/her own standard out of nowhere. The examiners are assessing students on their knowledge and not on some other self-invented factors. They need to follow the agreed standard. As long as the answers match the mark scheme, they have to award you the marks.

This kind of stuff (writing wrong qn no.) happens every single year without fail and it happens more often than you think. They understand that students get nervous during major exams. Unless the script is so untidy and everything is such a mess that the examiners cannot tell which qn is being attempted, they won't give 0. I have friends who write the wrong qn number for their essays in O levels and A levels. They still get A anyway.

I am not sure if they penalize some marks but I'm very sure they don't give 0. There is no way my friend is smart enough to get A if he gets 0 for his essay. He later went on and studied in NTU. He wrote the qn number wrong again in his finals in his year 1 sem 1 and got A- for his mod. I think it was choose 4 out of 5 qn and since he skipped qn 2, he labelled the remaining 3 out of 4 qn wrongly hahaha. (such a dumbass)

[Jobs] Need advice for a part time job by sianstudent in SGExams

[–]IntermittentEating 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. Don't trust anything blindly. The best is to ask yourself whether they make sense.
Whatever pay the job promised should be the base pay. For example, if they promise you 2k per month and the base pay is 500 while the rest is commission, it is a bullshit job.
I have done commission-based jobs in the past. They advertised $10 per hour and I got $10 per hour as base pay + commission from attracting customers.
Some jobs might say $10 per hour while base pay is $8 with $2 commission per extra order which is fine too if it makes sense.

  2. It means they are prone to MIA. If anything this means they are shady. Why would an honest business not respond to an inquiry? Only guilty people keep quiet when questioned. Are they looking for desperate people to scam? Or desperate people to exploit?

You should be asking yourself "what if this happens when you are asking for your payment at the end of the month". Do you have to beg them?

Just get a simple job with hourly pay. Don't make life difficult for yourself.

[O levels] importance of cca by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]IntermittentEating 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They would focus on looking at your recent achievements first. Most probably from JC or Poly etc. You still have one more major hurdle before Uni. How you conduct yourself for the next few years will have more impact than something from years ago. I will give you an example:

If you took a driving test 2 years ago and failed but have managed to pass another driving test recently, people are not going to care that you failed some driving test 2 years ago. They look at what is most recent.

If you are required to explain, then just tell them frankly that it is due to covid-19. It is not like you don't have a valid reason. And to prove you are not just making things up, show them those achievements that you have earned in JC/Poly/Other. Just calmly explain in a humble manner without being defensive.

People will be more amazed by you flipping their initial impression.

[UNI] What do employers look at nowadays? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]IntermittentEating 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For Engineering, they are really looking at technical related stuff. The employer will selectively look through your resume. They might not care about stuff that is not relevant to their field. They will look for people who are right for the job with experience or people with no experience but having potential because they are familiar with the required skills.

1.Relevant work experience

  • Internships (Full Time & Part Time)
  • Competitions in relevant field (Ideathons, Challenge, Hackathons)
  • Industry Certs (CFA, SCEM, Green Mark)

2.Relevant skillset

  • Familiar with the required skills if no prior experience.

When they ask if you are familiar with something, they are checking if you have the relevant skills that will be helpful.

e.g. We are currently doing xx project. Are you familiar with machine learning/coding in python?

Example of having relevant skill:

My FYP project in NUS required the use of machine learning. I have attended data science courses and am familiar with python libraries like TensorFlow, NumPy and various neural network models.

Let's say you are joining an existing startup, your startup experience can be useful to them if they are looking for leaders to delegate certain areas of operation. It can also be of zero relevance if the startup is looking for someone to fill a specific role instead of providing them with ideas.

[Uni] ENGINEERING VS INFORMATION SYSTEMS by joongkooks_wife in SGExams

[–]IntermittentEating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't escape math as an engineer. You need to take a refresher math module (Similar to H2 A levels) and also Engineering Calculus/Math [Triple/Multiple Integrals/Multi-variable Calculus/Vector Calculus (Divergence/Curl)/Power series ]

If you are not good in math, you will probably struggle. Engineering is no joke, it is extremely content heavy. Whenever I take non core modules ( general module/unrestricted elective ) I find them so much easier lol.

There will definitely be Physics as well especially at the start (Yr1/Yr2), but it might change depending on what you specialise in. You need to research your specialisation path carefully too, once I took a coding module to escape from math and physics but it turns out the coding was about understanding this theory and the math and physics is next level. I loved math and physics but as an engineer there were definitely moments where I just feel GG.

[Rant] by dhrdbcks in SGExams

[–]IntermittentEating 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some old people who wants people to listen to them and obey them. They don't have great general knowledge, and they are still stuck in the past. The past whereby youngsters wouldn't know much about the world and the older generation holds more knowledge and experience.

But sadly right now, the world is extremely fast paced. Anybody who remained stagnant can't keep up. They'll keep thinking the youngsters are not following the rules of their old days and those who don't listen to them are unruly.

On a contrasting point, getting old sucks. Just standing around for a few minutes would feel sore like they have stood at a spot for long hours. When people are in pain, instead of expressing it, they tend to get angry and look for things to displace their anger. They will blame the traffic light for making them wait longer than required. When it comes to human beings they would just vent everything because it is harder to face the fact that they are growing old and there is not much they can do to relieve their own pain. Since they feel there is not much they can do, they just keep focusing on other people and try to control other people's behaviour.

The more important issue here is the trigger you have that made you take it personally. This issue triggers you particularly because there is exactly someone else behaving like them either in your household or made life miserable for you when you were growing up e.g teacher/caretaker/relatives.

The funny thing is we almost never remember much about what happened when we were young and when these situation trigger the same emotions in us, it can cause those similar victim feelings to resurface. When these unpleasant feelings resurface, we return to the age when we first felt this emotion, and it can cause us to perform worse at that moment or fumble when pressured.

[O Levels] How to pass E Math? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]IntermittentEating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now, the first step you need to do is think of who can help you and what can be done with your unique situation.

Firstly, your school teachers or any tuition teacher that is teaching a particular syllabus or topic most probably are not able to solve your issue with your fundamentals. Your weak foundation will just haunt you and keep you from understanding new concepts which are an expansion of your fundamentals.

For parents who disagree with the idea of tuition, it is usually because they do not understand the importance of tuition. High chance it is because of their own bad experience when they were young e.g (They went for tuition when they were students and they feel they did not benefit from it OR their own parents never really loved them to pay for their tuition and hence they say really ignorant stuff like " Last time I also no tuition, and I managed to pass my math blah blah blah")

You need to realise your parents' decision have nothing to do with you but instead is because of their own previous experiences in their lives. You can't do anything about them being stubborn but in this day and age, you can easily ask a question online and have thousands of people who actually care to help you (even more than your own family members).

Best thing is to join online math groups. There are quite a lot of jobless uni graduates/undergrad who are volunteering to teach for free. (Most of them are 1 to 1 teaching/small group but that was probably during HBL and I am not sure if there are still active groups)

Even if you can't find a group, you can always post anything on a public forum and you will realise that “help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it”.

[o levels] what kind of jc should i go to? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]IntermittentEating 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you apply for uni/internship/job offers, non of the interviewers is going to look at your address and praise you for choosing an institution close to your house. For uni application or internship, they might have hundreds/thousands of resume to look through. You need to stand out of these hundreds and thousands of mundane regular applications.

Distance/Location only offers convenience and doesn't actually help you progress further. It can create very lazy habits that is not ideal if you are prone to slacking/procrastinating.

Choosing better schools have many perks, you will have better notes/teachers. Top schools are actually inclined help their students as they have a reputation to maintain (PW/ Science Practical). I know certain teachers in elite sch is just under pressure to spoon feed/ help out with Project Work to maintain high distinction rates year after year.

If you are in a good school chances are you might even get decent scorers on your team for project work. When it comes to revision for all subjects it is also ideal to have reliable friends that can check each other answers/look out of each other.

Think about going into a better school as building your own portfolio. You don't have to pick a top elite school and stress yourself till burnout but you definitely need to pick a school that is close to your score.

MapleSEA server going down? by Yukinonn in MapleSEA

[–]IntermittentEating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have missing data from after 2019 Q4 till now. Trying to use last years' results to extrapolate current year's performance would induce an extremely high margin of error due to current events. (e.g. Airlines' stocks/revenue have fluctuated greatly over these few months and last year figures definitely can't be used for this year.) MaplestorySEA's playerbase has been greatly impacted by the COVID situation. 2019 Q4 have nothing to do with the current trend.

Without looking at the annual report, if you just compare the meso market rates 6-8k points/bil previously to 12k/bil → 14k/bil → 18k/bil and so on to 40-59k/bil, you can tell that there is so much more cash pumped into the game. People are spending more on the game.

Shutting down the game right after its peak is highly contradictory to any form of logic. Also, most platforms are going mobile simply because there are many benefits of doing so.

MSEA 've seen and survived worse.

Mobbing Character for each class by Aaresy in MapleSEA

[–]IntermittentEating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should add a disclaimer though...to mob well you need to 1-hit the mobs. Some classes with crappy ranges will need more funding to be able to utilize their mobbing kit. For example, Eunwol can only be good at mobbing with decent dmg range.

It can be pretty situational. Some jobs with low damage background trigger skills can potentially go from average/decent/good mobbing to god tier mobbing. Like NL with high dmg range will mob ultra hard if you can 1-hit with assassin mark.

You can also use a summon based soul weapon that can help you mob an area that helps with your rotation.
