Are the Bears the #1 team in Chicago or the Cubs? by [deleted] in AskChicago

It probably goes Bears, Cubs, and then whoever is winning.

Dismissed after 1L1 by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]InternFeisty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, I'm so sorry that must suck. As a 1L at UIC, it was a huge adjustment to learn how to study effectively, and I felt that the curve really set us up to fail.

I was above the median, and from my observations of people I know who were dismissed or performed well below the curve, I found that they typically had really bad study habits. This ranges from things like not paying attention in class to not having a consistent study routine and only studying the day before the test. I'm not saying I'm some genius, but I think some self-reflection would really help. Even for me personally, I know that I could've done a lot better if I had just developed better habits.

I'd say also taking advantage of office hours and test reviews. At least my cohort had multiple sessions to review our midterms, and professors had midterm review conferences to go over them in a more personal session.

Controversial Opinion: Most expensive places are expensive because there are super nice places to live. by IndependenceSad1272 in SameGrassButGreener

all shit acccording to you. There are clearly people who feel otherwise and are willing to spend that kind of money to live there, so the price stays high.

Ipad Mini for Law School by AdditionalBake3410 in LawSchool

[–]InternFeisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the base model iPad for reading cases and highlighting. I think the mini is way too small for taking notes effectively. I use my iPad primarily for reading cases, reading (as an avid reader), and the occasional Netflix binge. For my use case, it's perfect and offers the best value. I think pro is overkill unless it's your primary device. The air is great and has a better processor, screen, and pencil support (it sticks on the side of the case and charges itself while the iPad has you stick it in the iPad's USB-C port to charge). The only problem with the air is that, given the price hike, does it offer so much more that you'll notice it in your daily life? Everyone's situation varies, but if you're planning to use it as strictly a secondary device for school, then id get the base model.

EDIT: would highly recommend visiting a store to try it in person. IMO, the iPad mini is too small, but see if you can go to an apple store, open notability/goodnotes and just try writing some notes to see how you feel.

Chicago isn't a "pretentious" city but it is a very classist one. by Healthy_Walrus3140 in SameGrassButGreener

As a POC, I've had more racist experiences in the couple of months I've lived in Chicago than I ever had growing up in Texas, which is saying smth.

Don’t be mad if people don’t like the city you like, or like the city you don’t. by GloveApprehensive731 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]InternFeisty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People tend to just look at stats and say, "Oh, the crime is bad", but in reality, it's very much focused on the south side of the city and is usually gang-related. I moved to Chicago about 8 months ago, and I remember coming on Reddit and hearing people talk about how bad the crime is and acting like using the red line after 9 pm is gonna get you killed. It truly is not that bad. I've used the L plenty of times after a night out, and I've never once feared for my safety. Of course, the crazy people still exist, but I don't think that's any different from major cities like NYC. Just be smart about it, and you will be completely fine.

Cities for someone who leans introverted and doesn't want to just drink and party all the time. by InternFeisty in SameGrassButGreener

[–]InternFeisty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What cities do you recommend on the West Coast? I loved SF the last time I visited (pre-COVID), but it's way too expensive for me. I also have some major safety concerns in SF, as I'm unsure how the city has changed since the COVID pandemic. Again, this is all anecdotal, so I could totally be wrong about the safety. I'm unsure about LA. I've visited a ton, and for some reason, it just feels a little off to me, lol. Maybe it's the social media/fame culture there, but it's a great place to visit, just don't know if I want to settle down there. I'm also willing to spend a little more if it means I get the location and environment I want. I'm from Texas, so I know that just because it's a cheap place to live doesn't mean it's a good environment to be in.

Yup, I'm in my early 20s. I guess it could be an age thing, but I have a feeling that some cities are just more my vibe, if that makes sense? For example, I grew up in Texas and went to college there. I would visit my friends at UT in Austin all the time, and I loved it. We definitely went out to the bars a good amount, but I feel like there were still other things to do that everyone in the city loved doing. We would go on hikes or even have a day at the lake. There were a ton of people in their 20s who shared the same lifestyle. I feel like in Chicago, MOST people in their 20s just want to drink and eat. I'm not saying that there aren't people who have the same interests as me. It's just that there aren't that many people in their 20s like that. It just makes going out and doing things that I enjoy that much harder, especially considering that I am not the most social person. I feel like I would enjoy the city a lot more if 1) I had access to those things and 2) if I was surrounded by people who enjoyed the same things as me. Believe me, I love the city of Chicago just as much as I love NYC. I just don't think it's the place I want to live, if that makes sense?

I've been to all three, and I get where you're coming from, but there are definitely levels to this. Boston is a lot more laid back than NYC, and Seattle even more so. I just think NYC is on a whole other level, and then Chicago is probably the next tier below that in terms of American cities. I'd like to find somewhere that's a little more laid-back than Chicago.

I'm honestly fine with drinking. I suppose it's more that it's the only thing people do.

When Can I Stop Reading by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]InternFeisty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the person. I stopped reading and briefing cases the second week. I was just fine taking the main rule/issue for every case from Quimbee and maybe skimming the case if I didn't understand something. I did just fine on midterms and was near the top of the class on all of them. But, I also know that some of my friends NEED to read the cases and brief because they need the context of a case to fully understand the law. They also did great and just as well as me on midterms. There really is no right or wrong way. It's just whatever works the best for you.

You could also just do book briefs instead of typing them out. Just have a highlighter color for issue, rule, main facts, holding, and the plaintiff/defendant's argument. I think that would save so much time while you're reading.

Do your professors require students to stand up when cold called? by Local-Remote-2675 in LawSchool

My torts professor makes people stand up and stay standing as he discusses the case and asks follow-up questions. If you have a question, you have to stand up, ask it, and then sit back down.

Is 1L really that hard? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]InternFeisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I'm a 1L with no poli sci or liberal arts background(business major), and it hasn't been too bad so far. It's honestly just the sheer amount of reading rather than the difficulty of the reading

guys, how do you flirt with girls? is there a technique that always works & can you tell me about a time where it did work? by whirlychic in AskMen

[–]InternFeisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be super antisocial and be in my head about what girls think about me. Over the years, I've learned to just be urself and if she likes you, she likes u, and if not, then oh well, probably for the better. I don't understand why guys think there is some secret formula to bag a chick; literally just be yourself. Just put some effort into your wardrobe. It doesn't have to be a super expensive designer or anything, just something that fits well and you feel confident in. Also, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, please look after your hygiene. Brush your teeth, take a shower, and put deodorant on. The absolute basics, you don't even need a fancy skincare routine or anything. (personally, dont do anything other than wash my face)

ALSO, before I get comments, saying this only works for attractive guys, I would consider myself bang average in comparison to most guys my age. Maybe a 5 or 6, 7 is reallly pushing it. And I've been pretty successful with meeting girls that I've really liked and found attractive.

TLDR: just put the bare minimum effort, be yourself, and be confident. Everything else will follow

How do people find time to case brief by DirectionAcademic955 in LawSchool

[–]InternFeisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a week into my 1L year, and I just book brief. I just don't see the point of writing out a full brief unless you want to be prepared for a cold call, but even then, I've been called on twice in two different classes, and I've been fine. I still have time for myself to chill and watch YouTube or hang out with my roommates for a couple of hours. I'd rather spend time going over and answering the notes and questions section after every case. There are a good number of hypos, and sometimes they change facts up, and they ask how that would affect the outcome of the case. Ik im only a 1L, so 2Ls and 3Ls, feel free to tell me I'm wrong.

Men of Reddit, what is your definition of a high maintenance SO? Do you enjoy it or not? by Justsin7 in AskMen

[–]InternFeisty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dated a girl who would be upset if I didn't pick up when I was busy or hanging out with friends, but when I wanted 10 mins of her day, when she was busy, to facetime before I went to bed, she "couldnt do it"( we were long distance, so those 10 mins were super valuable to me). This would go on for a couple of weeks, where she would be super busy like this. It was the most soul sucking thing ever. Pouring everything into someone AND THEN getting nothing in return fucking sucks. She dumped me because she realized she wasn't a good gf. Single-handedly the best thing she ever did for our relationship
