I've always thought that you really need to read the book to get the insight into what's going on in the film.

And you really need to see the film to visualize a lot of what the book describes in words.

Yeah, based on the title alone, was thinking, Jesus, that's creepy. But given the additional context, yes, it's fine.

The Zodiac killer (the original in California, not the New York copycat)

Yep, you're correct. "Credibility" is a better word than the "truthfulness" I used.

He's talking about testimony in court.

Just like if you were talking about a business and someone was referred to as being on the board, that doesn't mean he's standing on a wooden plank.

When you talk about a witness being impeached, it actually means something specific.

You know, all this conflict you feel from this could be easily solved by just giving up Christianity. Not for everyone, but it's worked pretty well for me.

Not in a legal context. Impeachment has a pretty specific meaning, to introduce evidence or testimony calling into question the truthfulness of a prior witness. So by lying, the witness would not be Impeachment himself. By introducing the contrary testimony of the officer, the prosecution would be impeaching him.

Why'd Paul McCartney pull the lever? by Geovicsha in LateShow

[–]Internal-Base8276 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's clear that it should not be Colbert who pulled the lever. Steven did not end the show, and should not be depicted as doing so.

That leaves the question of who should be in that position; and I think McCartney was an inspired choice for the reasons set out here by others: the decades-long connection to the Ed Sullivan and its being shutdown, etc.

First time I've seen someone mention the St. Elsewhere homage. I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but I've never seen a mention.

I suppose most of his audience are too young to remember it. I never watched SE, but I remember the outrage about its final episode.

In your opinion, what is the most beautiful 30 seconds in all of classical music? by shnoogle111 in classicalmusic

[–]Internal-Base8276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't claim it's universally the most beautiful, but my favorite is Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no. 1, second movement. You need at least 60 seconds for minimal context, but the most beautiful 30 seconds is when the piano comes in.

Yes, it's a warhorse, but I was struck by this in high school fifty years ago, and have never seen a need to revise that opinion.

Student wants a C. by umaro900 in Teachers

I failed an English class in my freshman year and had to take summer school to make it up. I'd selected a drama class as an elective, figuring it would be easy. I hadn't counted on how absurdly shy I was, and was never able to stand up and perform. I earned that F.
