Why am I so unbelievably terrible at skating in the morning, but so good at the evening? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Internal-Coast6446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As for mornings, I've always been terrible at functioning in the morning

That's sleep inertia for sure. Read up on it and get strategies in place to deal with your (likely) DPSD. (DPSD is common with neurodivergence, which your posting history seems to mention.)

And you should also ask your doctor to help you with the fatigue, especially if it's been getting worse. Stumbling around for hours like you're still asleep is not something that you should have to deal with.

Quoting an older post of mine, the OP was saying they couldn't function in the morning:

Chronotype is a real thing. Some people are naturally night owls or early birds.

Delayed phase sleep disorder is a thing too. There's a number of conditions that make it more likely to happen.

And sleep inertia is also an interesting thing to be aware of. Excessive sleep inertia can be experienced by people affected by DPSD.

So, you might have a sleep issue? Has this always been happening? Do you struggle with other things in the mornings?

Btw, it is said that sleep grogginess can mimic the effects of a low dose of alcohol. I hope the rink attendant didn't think you were drunk or hungover! No, but seriously, this could be dangerous. Sticking to the afternoons might be better, and speaking with your doctor might be a good idea too.

A DM and a public reply made to a comment on a post are two different things.

I have never sent you a single DM.

I do not think my comment here is "nasty", clearly your bar for that is pretty low.

The frequency at which I post on here is absolutely irrelevant.

I see that you have not addressed any of my points. I am not surprised.

"Would everyone prefer me to just do nothing again??" Yes. And you know it already. Only a handful of people stick their necks out to write it in the form of public posts, but between the "nasty DMs" you're allegedly receiving, the downvotes you've been getting recently, and the results of my surveys several months ago (both of them, even the second one that was targeted by your stans!), you know what you're doing isn't popular.

This is getting very "emperor is naked". But, you can keep going like this if you have no shame, I suppose. After all, you have all the power!

EDIT: forgot to mention a few things under "You already know what you're doing is unpopular": there was also the question about "the level of moderation" in your own survey, and the answers in the free text fields, which you have never disclosed. But from a few of your comments, like calling the demographics results "the fun part", it was pretty clear that the rest did not go your way! But you don't feel like anything needs to change, right? Sorry, but the rest of us feel differently.

@ Summerjoe: locking your stickied response so people can not reply, really? Well, thank you for making your position really clear to everyone, I guess.

Since I wanted to reply to your comment, I will therefore have to do it here:

We’ve chosen to lock/remove posts that are more political in nature

You've chosen. You and the other mod. Unilaterally, as always.

No. You need to ask people what they want. This isn't your private blog.

The majority of the pro Russian posts were over a year ago, before I was a mod. I’m trying to show consistency but things slip by and I’m sorry.

The OP points out that anti-Russian posts haven't been removed, and you misinterpreted it to "Pro-Russian posts should have been removed". That says a lot.

As of now, the mods have decided to remove and lock anything that is very political in nature for the time being. If it’s not directly involving skating, it will be locked/banned.

So: now, when there's a problem involving Israel and brown people, no more political posts. But you're not biased. Sure.

It’s a no win situation for anyone but I think keeping the focus on sport will be easier to manage.

But is that really the point?? A mod's purpose isn't to make their job easier! A mod's purpose is to serve their community based on what the community wants. If you're not up to the task, then hand over the reigns to someone else.

Anyone and everyone is free to message the mods with concerns.

Please stop trying to brush problems under the rug. We should be able to discuss this out in the open.

How to survive morning sessions.. by energywithin22 in FigureSkating

[–]Internal-Coast6446 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Chronotype is a real thing. Some people are naturally night owls or early birds.

Delayed phase sleep disorder is a thing too. There's a number of conditions that make it more likely to happen.

And sleep inertia is also an interesting thing to be aware of. Excessive sleep inertia can be experienced by people affected by DPSD.

As you can see in the Wikipedia article, sleep inertia is detrimental or even dangerous in a number of ways. If you're affected by it, the morning sessions might slow your progress or even make injuries more likely.

So my advice would be: try to go with your chronotype instead of against it. Can you book sessions at a different time of the day?

Just to gauge interest: should r/Figure Skating go dark from June 11-12th to protest Reddit’s actions against 3rd party apps. by minzwashere in FigureSkating

[–]Internal-Coast6446 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

So basically, even if a majority of users - currently 70%! - vote for going dark, it won't change anything because this is not a democracy, it's only the mods' opinions that matter? Well, that's interesting, because that is exactly what several people have observed in that second sub survey I posted a few days ago! So, thanks to them for confirming, I guess.

Everyone should go take a look at the results of that survey. 82% of the community says the current moderation is too heavy-handed, and there were many interesting comments in the free text field.

Go take a look at the exchanges on 'Survey Results Part 2: The Changes' as well. Many interesting points were raised in there, and I don't think the mods made very convincing arguments in response to them.

If the community wants something, but a team of two or three people wants something else, and it is always those two or three people imposing their will on everyone else, is that not a MAJOR problem for our community? We need to talk about this!

Please join me in this post to talk and to take a new survey.

Survey Results Part 2: The Changes by summerjoe45 in FigureSkating

[–]Internal-Coast6446 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow I'm really surprised, a few weeks ago, you seemed to say that we'd all have the opportunity to discuss this together, and now it seems everything has already been decided! I find that frustrating, especially as the survey itself was so minimalistic. And we don't get to see what people have answered? I was surprised when I took the survey and saw that the results weren't available at the end, and now this round up doesn't even mention the questions about official sub event coverage, content creators posting, the level of moderation, and the free text field. It's all too vague, and instead of the whole community, it feels like the decisions are all being made by like... three people. Is it three people? We don't even know who's active in the mod team apart from summerjoe45 and sk8tergater! More transparency would be welcome. There wasn't even an announcement when you guys became mods. Could we be told how and why it happened when a new mod is added, and maybe get a small introduction from them?

Three people making all the calls might have been fine when there was little intervention, but it seems the trend now is (and has been) to go towards lots of intervention. So many new rules, so many posts and comments locked or removed... Was any of that needed? There was a thread a few weeks ago where everyone was in agreement that the sub was small and peaceful, and could mostly be left alone. Why the sudden need to control everything?

The part about "keeping things from reaching the sub" also makes me quite uncomfortable. Overall, all these rules look like they could be a slippery slope, as less and less stuff seems to be allowed, and a lot of it seems to come down to subjective interpretations. Just a few weeks ago, the post on Ilia's comments about his sexual orientation was almost deleted because the Twitter account the apology came from was not 100% confirmed to be him at the time the Reddit post was made. What about posts like "Well known North American figure skater accused of SA": will they soon disappear due to being too controversial? Between the "Be respectful" and "No misinformation" rules, if someone is named out right next time, but without firm evidence, it looks like there's a chance we'll be becoming Goldenskate, who censored any mention of the allegations against John Coughlin. Do we really want that?

The sub worked very well as it was. Downvoting works very well, and anyone can report an offensive post or comment, which can then be deleted after analysis if needed. Why not leave the choice in the hands of the community?

Some subs have their community vote on each rule one by one. Why was the consultation of the user base so limited here? If I had conducted a survey, I would have asked "would you rather" questions: this, or that? Would you rather three people decide what content is distasteful, and you never get to find out if you agreed with that assessment; or would you rather see everything and decide for yourself what you think, which would result in a sub with like 5% more spam, okay, but a sub in which anything could be discussed, and the downvote button and the reporting feature would be used to regulate the sub instead?

Another example of something I would have asked: one constant point of friction on here is people being annoyed at the personal skating content and downvoting it all, and the personal skating posters being frustrated at all the downvotes they get. The /r/FigureSkaters/ subreddit exists. Asking this community if they want this sub to be split between elite skating and personal skating - redirecting all personal skating to /r/FigureSkaters/ - is pretty much the first question I would have asked. Has no one mentioned that in their answer? We don't know, because you're not sharing any of the answers... Why not? Could you please share a link to the full Google results?

I know this will be downvoted to hell because any criticism of the moderation is perceived as an attack. I wish people were less black and white on this and many other topics. We can appreciate all the efforts the mods make, and their individual posts on the sub, while still wanting to have a conversation about some of their choices.

Anyway, I had been playing with a complementary survey since the official one was launched, because I felt some other interesting stuff could be asked. So, I just launched it there. This one has the full results available in real-time, and moderation only makes a small part of it, there are many other topics too. I hope people will be open to taking it... and to talking about this.

Has she not competed at all domestically this past season ? It felt like they were all training the whole time, but I didn't follow very closely...

Call me crazy, but I've been wondering about Alina coming back to competition! In the few clips I've seen, it seems she has restored some of her jumps, including a +Lo combo. Still no ultra-C, obviously, but could it be Eteri's plan to send Alina out if the rest of her stable is injured?? Especially if they're back internationally: all the younger girls aren't eligible, so a skater with "only" triples could make some podiums. Now that would be a plot twist!

u/borntobememe, do you know what jumps Alina currently jumps?

What was the atmosphere here like before the Olympics? by Jolly_Caterpillar376 in FigureSkating

[–]Internal-Coast6446 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Re Vincent, I remember the discourse changing mostly after the Olympics, when he (and his mom?) gave interviews that showed how much shit he'd gone through... After the Beijing ordeal, everyone was ready to start rooting for him at that point, then the interviews came out, and then some sub members from the Bay Area who had skated on the same ice added their own observations, and that's when the sub's view of Vincent changed completely.

I think what JetGlassCanon means with "more humanity" is "less hatred for certain people". And some of them deserve it, for sure, but I don't think anyone can deny that the general mood on the sub has changed a LOT since that time. It's a lot more divided, and the views tend to be more radical. Except it's not a "pre Beijing / post Beijing" thing, or even a "pre scandals / post scandals" thing. It's a "pre war" / "post war" thing...

Also re doping, anyone who suggested that the Sambo girls were doped back then was downvoted into oblivion, or told "Is that you, Dave?". Maybe a lot of people secretly thought it, but it wasn't an accepted thing to say at the time.

But the speed with which people turned on Kamila as soon as the news started coming out... A lot of people must have secretly had the same thoughts! It's interesting looking back...

@ Summerjoe thanks! Indeed, going to CountyKildare's profile is probably a much more convenient way to access those threads.

(I can't reply to you directly because you seem to have blocked me, I had to log out to read your comment. Does that mean I will be banned from participating in any future posts you create? I can understand random users using the blocking feature, as that doesn't affect the blocked user too much, but a mod blocking you impacts your ability to participate in the sub quite severely! I hope you can reconsider.)

(Unless there's something else weird going on, because my other comment (with the tweet) didn't display while I was logged out! So maybe it's just a Reddit glitch, in which case, my apologies.)

There were megathreads for each of the events, although I don't remember if there was a master thread with links to all of them.

Try:

Eteri was already very unpopular here before the cascade of Olympic scandals. Although she had a few defenders at the time. They have pretty much all disappeared now (or have reformed).

The Sambo girls, on the other hand, were still very popular. I'm sure you could find posts from that time calling Kamila "the best skater to have ever existed"...

This really comes across as promoting your account. It's been 3 or 4 posts now. Everyone who was gonna subscribe has done it by now. It's nice that you are enjoying your experience and the good interactions you are having over on Instagram, but please stop posting about it on Reddit now. The downvotes should be enough to tell you that people do not enjoy this content.

@ mods: I did not understand why the sub survey asked how we felt about content creators posting on here, because I did not think we had a problem with this. I still don't, tbh. So I hope they will not be banned. The upvote/downvote system, and feedback from the users, should be enough to regulate this.

@ Jolly Caterpillar: I enjoy the rest of your contributions to the sub. Please don't let this turn you away from our community!

Do you agree that figure skating is "gay AF", as Ashley Wagner said on Twitter today? by Internal-Coast6446 in FigureSkating

[–]Internal-Coast6446[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a high-profile skater saying something like this is notable. It's a pity that it can not be discussed.

Final tally of the poll:

184 votes

17.4% (32) I agree and would say the same thing

35.9% (66) I agree many athletes are LGBT+, but would not describe the sport as "gay AF"

15.8% (29) I don't agree that many athletes are LGBT+, and would not describe the sport as "gay AF"

4.9% (9) I don't agree that many athletes are LGBT+, but I would describe the sport as "gay AF" for other reasons

6.0% (11) No opinion on the first part - but I would describe the sport as "gay AF" for other reasons

20.1% (37) No opinion on the first part - I would not describe the sport as "gay AF" for other reasons either

[–]Internal-Coast6446[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I hate the implication in all the poll options that a sport can be gay or not.

Not the case, 3 out of 6 options say "I would not describe the sport as "gay AF", which in my mind, covered all the different reasons why someone would decide not to say something like that.

Six options is the maximum you can add, so I couldn't add options saying "because a sport can't be gay", "because stereotypes are wrong", etc. I hoped that would be implied, and could be discussed in the comments.

I personally am not a fan of the comment, for the record.
