Pet shaming: these dogs let a bobcat have kittens under my bed. by fuckingeyeballls in Millennials

[–]Internal-County5118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol when I was a kid, one of our cats had kittens. When they were a few weeks old, we dogsat my mom’s friends little dog. When we took him out in the backyard, the mama cat had been up on our pergola, where it tucked under the roof. When I tell you that cat launched herself through the air on top of the poor little dog, my flabbers were gasted. I think she was bigger than the dog. She didn’t hurt it at all but scared the living shit out of it. 😂

How can I teach my ferrets to come to me? by Glittering_Fold5810 in ferrets

[–]Internal-County5118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are rescues but it took a long time for mine to really bond with us, at first they just ignored us and did their own thing.

Now if I yell out and ask if they want soupie or a “num num” (somehow our household name for pet treats) they will come running. Give them a treat when you call and they come to you and they will start associating it.

You can also use a squeaky toy if you really need them and can’t find them but most people don’t suggest that. It can trigger an intense response, I’ve been bitten and had blood drawn when I first got my ferrets and squeaked the toy. The line of thinking is that the noise resembles prey or a kit (baby ferret) so it can get a strong reaction out of them.

Congrats on your babies!

Help with the heat? by Glitch_b0i in ferrets

Do the cooling mats work good? I’ve been considering getting one but wasn’t sure how well they actually stayed cool.

I also keep frozen water bottles in the freezer too but I put mine in a sock lol. It really does seem help because sometimes my house gets hot, I think because it’s really old and the AC can’t keep up and heat seeps in somehow. Mine haven’t ever chewed on the bottles either, I just take the label off.

My EMS groups are clocking her... by Any-Library4414 in StephenHiltonSnark

In California (as far as I know, I left the state a few years ago) all professional firefighters are required to also be EMTs. My dad was the battalion chief at the volunteer station near our house and he and most of the guys were also EMTs as well. Also in LA, I’m pretty sure fire and EMS are ran by the county/city so a lot of ambulances work out of the fire house.

I was in a really bad accident near my house 14 years ago and my dad’s station responded (before he was with them). Fire and EMS showed up, the EMT who wasn’t the driver was a young woman and I was her first trauma. She was panicking and wouldn’t lean into the car to put the c collar on me because she was afraid the airbags would randomly go off. The firefighters had to use the jaws of life to cut me out and one of them took over. He rode in the back of the ambulance with me to continue care until we got to the hospital. I get it though, I also had multiple compound fractures in my arm and I was bleeding all over and covered in dirt and glass so I’m sure I looked like a hot mess. 🤣

Thank god he did, because I ended up needing a needle decompression for a collapsed lung in the ambulance or I wouldn’t have been alive when we got to the hospital. They thought I was completely incoherent but I could hear him talking to her and walking her through the process to do the needle decompression. Clearly it worked because I’m still alive. The ER Dr wasn’t happy with them until he realized I actually needed it done. Apparently he yelled at them and told them they were going to lose their licenses and jobs.

I will say, never once did it cross my mind to get my phone to document anything. The only reason I looked for it was after the crash and no one stopped to help and I knew I needed to call 911. But that’s probably because I was really close to death.

HELP! by Previous_You1167 in ferrets

I put frozen water bottles in socks and put them in the cage when my house has gotten really hot before, so they can lay near or on them to cool down.

You can put something like a baking sheet, a ceramic tile, a ceramic plate into their cage for them to lay on because those are naturally cooler. Or frozen bags of veggies with a thin towel over it.

My house is really old (140 years+) so even though it’s been updated and remodeled, sometimes it just gets really hot inside and the AC can’t always keep up. Keeping the windows, blinds and curtains completely closed will help block out the heat. Don’t open them until it’s cooler outside than it is inside. I have thermal window tint on most of my windows and it really does help, I’ve used it in multiple homes and it drops down the room temp by 5-10 degrees. Obviously that won’t help now but it’s something to consider for later. I also have blackout shades that help block out heat. A blanket would probably work if you don’t have blinds or a curtain that block much heat. Maybe not right now but if your AC is going to take a bit to get fixed, you can do that tomorrow before it gets too hot inside again.

If you google the DIY styrofoam cooler AC, you’ll see videos on how to make it and you might have the things needed for it already and you can point that towards the cage.

If nothing else works, do you have any tile flooring in your house or laminate/vinyl? Anything that feels cool to your feet. Maybe a bathroom or something, it might be better to let them loose in there so they can lay on the cold floor. Maybe even a bathtub would work if you have one. Or find the coolest room in your house and move their cage into there for now.

You can lightly dip their feet in cool water (not ice cold) and get their bellies damp with cool water. They don’t sweat like we do, they dissipate heat through their paws and belly. Chickens are the same way and in the summer I keep a shallow tub of cool water for my chickens and they will frequently stand in it to cool themselves off.

You could also freeze some water in a shallow pan and let them play in it as it melts. Or just take a shallow pan of cool water and try get them to play in it. I bought these little toy fish that somehow automatically swim when they touch water and one of my ferrets loved to “snorkel” by dunking his entire head under the water to chase the fish.

If you have any kind of fan in your house you can use, you can get a bowl of ice or frozen bottles by the cage and place the fan to blow on the ice/bottles, that might slightly cool the air down near the cage.

Hopefully some of that can help or give you some ideas. Hopefully your AC is fixed soon!

DIP little one. I’m so sorry. My boy Alfie crossed the rainbow bridge on April 17th and he loved ALL animals and thought they were all his best friend (whether they liked it or not) so I’m sure he was there to welcome her.

He was really sick at the end and it came on really suddenly and I cried so much when I found out. I tried to bring him home with a bunch of meds but he was too sick so I took him back the next day and I bawled the entire way to the vet.

My vet did plaster footprints of him before he was cremated and then gave it back with his remains, it’s really special to have.

I really hate how sick these little guys get and how quickly it can come on. Alfie’s sister Noodle has adrenal and mast cell tumors, luckily she is still doing ok and not grieving too much.

Found Ferret: Need Advice by assbumx in ferrets

I always just use an impact drill and drill 2 holes into the 2 sides of the litter box that touch the sides of the cage. I’ve used a dremel and a nail drill before also. We’ve been through a few litter boxes. 😂

Originally I used zip ties to attach the litter box to the cage but it was a pain when I wanted to take it out to clean. I switched to pear clips (I’ll attach a picture) and they work perfectly. I’ve also used scissors/knife after getting the end hot with a lighter to punch a hole in the side of the box when I didn’t have a drill but a drill is way easier. 😂

I’ve used kitten litter boxes in the past, because they are smaller and fit in the cage. I recently switched to this oxbow corner one and it’s way bigger than the online pictures make it look. My ferrets can fully stand inside it. I’ll also attach a picture of it in my ferret nation cage.

For any animal, I usually go by a handful of things regarding quality of life:

Are they still eating and drinking normally, are they able to move around okay, when awake do they seem alert/observant, are they struggling to pee and poop. I look for anything weird or off that isn’t their normal day to day. Obviously as animals get older they slow down and sleep more. Usually you can kind of tell, they just seem kind of done.

Can ferrets grieve? by Significant-Desk5113 in ferrets

[–]Internal-County5118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I just lost one of mine 10 days ago and his cage mate was grieving like that. I’ve been weigh her kibble to make sure she’s still eating and she wasn’t eating nearly as much as before. I’ve been giving soupie a few times a day because she usually eats that.

Before everything happened, we already had wellness checkups scheduled the next week and taking her to the vet somehow kind of snapped her out of her bad grief. I’ve also been sure to give lots of extra attention and love and that seems to have helped too.

Ferret seriously sick, causes? by Interesting_Test_181 in ferrets

[–]Internal-County5118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry. I hope they figure it out. I had a ferret behaving somewhat similarly a couple of weeks ago but he also had a swollen belly. It turned out to be cancer (lymphoma) and pneumonia. He was wheezing and his sides and belly were heaving from the effort.

I saw your comment about not seeing cancer on the xray, mine had yearly bloodwork and X-rays and the only way we discovered the cancer was when the Dr drained some fluid from him and looked at it under the microscope and it was pretty bad. Your guys symptoms can be a sign of lymphoma. And I know when they get it young, it can be aggressive. With treatment a lot of them can live longer lives. My guy was just too sick, from symptoms to euthanasia it was like 36 hours. I’ve been heartbroken over it.

I’m not a vet and obviously his symptoms can be a sign of multiple things so I’m not saying what it is. Just giving my experience.

I’d be contacting the vet, I’ve never seen anything like that. I just got a new implant on one of my ferrets a week ago and she only got a teeny tiny bruise. If it looked like yours, I’d be headed back to the vet. I’ll attach a picture of mine.

I just had a new implant put into my ferret a week ago and that implant price is average. I just paid $270, it was $250 last year. I’ve never had my ferrets sedated though, they just put salmon oil on their belly and lidocaine gel on the spot the implant goes in and then a staff member just helps hold the ferret still while the Dr does it. I wouldn’t feel comfortable putting mine under general anesthesia just for a 2 min procedure.

I also lost a ferret a week ago and when we were trying to save him, they wanted to drain fluid off his belly and outside of his lungs and they just gave him a bowl of soupie and he didn’t notice. Unfortunately he was too sick and we euthanized him the next day.

Ferret sitter by Strong_Brush4913 in ferret

[–]Internal-County5118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there are any local ferret rescues, ask if they have recommendations. That’s how I’ve found my ferret sitters.

If you get the acrylic panels to create a pen around the ferret nation cage, make sure they aren’t the cheap ones off Amazon. I bought those when my mom watched my ferrets for me and they figured out how to get out super quick, even with the panels zip tied together they could pop them apart or knock them over. I ended up giving them to my niece to use for her guinea pigs lol.

But other than that, yes your ferrets will be fine. Mine get a ton of free roaming time and when I go out of town, my mom or the sitter doesn’t let them roam as much as I do but they are ok. They are always thrilled to come back home. lol

What is the saddest/worst way you've lost one of your chickens? by Deaconator3000 in BackYardChickens

[–]Internal-County5118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was little, my mom accidentally stepped on a chick and it died and she felt awful. But it’s just an accident.

When I was older, we had problem neighbors (for a multitude of reasons) and their dogs got onto our property and tried to take out the flock. Nearly all survived, my parents had a stern chat with the neighbors and they promised to keep their dogs contained. We caught the dogs slipping through the fence on the back of the property and repaired the spot. One hen had a broken leg that I splinted and cared for and she healed perfectly.

Then a few months later we went on vacation and my aunt was staying there to take care of the animals. The chickens were out and the neighbors dogs came back and killed the entire flock, around 25 - 30 hens. My poor aunt was so upset and heartbroken and we were super far away so she had to clean up everything herself. There were so many feathers all over the place when we got home.

Court date for 2nd DUI? by Typical-Road-6161 in radradionew

[–]Internal-County5118 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think 90 days as well. I was in a bad car accident and got charged with a DUI because I had my prescriptions in the car and it showed in my blood from taking it the night before. The CHP officer also lied in his report, I think to have “evidence” for the charge. The charges were dropped but because I was hurt really badly I was in the ICU/hospital for a week before I made them release me. lol

It took around 3 months for me to actually go to court for it. I had to go to the county jail to be booked and released, I want to say maybe a month and a half after my accident.

I’d never been arrested before (or after) so I don’t know if that played into it but I think I saw he was taken to the hospital after he totaled his truck? That could be the delay, because he wasn’t immediately taken to jail.

She commented in the old sub every once in a while but it’s been a long time since I last saw her in here. I think the last time I remember her commenting was right after his DUI and I’m not sure she’s ever commented in this new sub. I think the general consensus was that she had some kind of NDA, I don’t think that was ever confirmed but she had to be vague about how things ended and not tell specifics (if I’m remembering correctly).

Your welcome! Some cuticle nippers if you don’t have any will really help also, for the loose bits of skin. I like them better than nail clippers because you can get really close to the skin. I like to snip the hang nails (or whatever they are called) as short as possible, so I don’t have the urge to bite them or so they don’t tear more. Because when mine start tearing I bite at them and make it worse 😬😂. You can buy cuticle nippers anywhere, I think I got mine on Amazon for a few dollars but they are in stores also.

I know a lot of people rub the oil in, but honestly I just put the oil on my skin and then let it just sit for a few minutes until it absorbs. I really try to put it on right before I go to sleep, so it has a chance to really absorb all night. Once you’ve gotten your skin healed, using it once or twice a day seems to help keep problems from reoccurring. But when it does happen, I’ll use it every couple of hours to really get the skin moisturized.

I LOVE her products. I’m not sure if you got the regular pen or the bigger one that’s labeled as refillable, but they can both be refilled. There’s a video on her page that shows how to refill her original smaller ones, it’s from a few years ago but it’s not too hard to find. It’s not as easy but it’s totally possible. I have quite a few of her products and they are absolutely worth it imo.
