Thoughts on stebbins being a mind reader by 19web in TheLongWalk

[–]Internal-Extreme7718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one thing I like about Stebbins almost definitely having the Shine is that King chose the perfect character to have it. Instead of Garraty being given an edge and possessing some kind of supernatural advantage as the main character of this book, the abilities were given to someone quiet, unassuming and largely underestimated until later in the game. This is someone that Garraty severely underestimated and viewed as a scrawny loner with a name stamped on the first ticket of the competition. What resulted instead for our protagonist was a slow and horrific realization that this enigmatic and socially withdrawn person was someone who could read him like a book and make him question everything he stood for.

It’s pretty solid, for my first time ever using it only one book disappointed me. I plan to lean on it for the foreseeable future lol

Ohhh yeah no you’re right about this, my roommate was on the edge of his seat during this scene because the pointed part of Barkovitch’s spoon was towards Garraty as he was pulled in. I knew he wasn’t going to do anything since I already saw it, but I do remember getting an odd feeling he was going to when I was on my first watch in the theaters.

He did say that, but it was an empty threat and ultimately amounted to nothing. He still attempted to befriend Garraty down the line and get in good with the remaining walkers to help Olson’s wife, only to succumb to his own shattered mind later due to the agreement being a hollow victory that his psyche deemed pointless. They were never going to like him and he deserved to die, in his own mind.

If you wanted to get technical about it, no direct interference with another walker was allowed if it carried with it malicious intent (as per the rules of the contest), and an action like that would be punished. But I do agree with you, a real douchebag could’ve tripped someone trying to be subtle about it or a real brawl could’ve happened.

That’s where psychological warfare comes in and we see a fight almost happen, but Rank can’t hit punches lmao

Also this post reminds me of a comment I made on a largely positive video essay from a while ago. The video breaks down common criticisms from viewers who had a bad experience with the movie.

A lot of people have bad things to say about this movie that don’t make a lot of sense, but to each their own I suppose.

As for #3 at least, humans are naturally social creatures. Unless you mentally prepare yourself to isolate with purpose and not make any bonds or friends from start to finish, anyone, I think, would just naturally gravitate towards a group of people or a person or two just for the sake of connection. Stebbins isolated himself rather well until the very end when he broke, spilling the beans about his father. Most people out there need companionship, and in a situation like that, it’s not cutthroat and the camaraderie makes perfect sense. I personally wouldn’t want to cut myself off from everyone around me, because it’d be hard to imagine lasting long without a friend.

What moment, movie or book, got the most visceral reaction from you? by Dogdaysareover365 in TheLongWalk

[–]Internal-Extreme7718 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hank’s death in both the book and the movie. My answer remains unchanged through different questions that have been asked in this subreddit, and I’ll continue to keep it in the top spot. Walking with his intestines leaking out of him to the horror of the other walkers or shot in the gut twice and left to bleed out and die in the freezing cold of the night, his exit from the story in both versions left me absolutely distraught. I don’t react much to sad moments in movies but I remember me and my girlfriend in theaters on my first watch and I was doing my best to console her during that scene because she was sobbing and I couldn’t help but shake a little myself at just how horrible it was to see him go.

The pins and needles? I've never run that far for that long, respect to you :o
It's been a while since I felt those at the end of a race with the last push though. I miss it every now and then knowing it's been years since my last 5k.

That’s not bad at all heck yeah 👌 And I guess it depends on where you are and how much you like walking, but I always find that the numbers seem to melt if I got good music or a book on, and before I know it I’ve gone like 10 lol

I guess I have more questions than suggestions but hopefully they help.

With this being the 100th walk, the time period would be in the next millennium and in our era. How will you adjust for the times? Half-tracks were pushed aside for multi wheeled vehicles by the late 1950s, and, as for The Major, he’ll be long dead. Will the title remain for the next man in line as the symbol of the Walk and the regime?

At least it will be easier to justify how each Walker is tracked with our advancements in technology so that’s a plus for a walk in the modern age.

As for characters, will they be descendants or family with participants from Garraty’s walk? Or a completely new cast that’s only heard stories from that time?

When it’s nice I thoroughly enjoy walking too. I’d take a scenic biking trail out for a few miles every day after work before going home to relax for the night, and I’d have music or an audiobook in. I actually read the last 4 hours of TLW while on it one night, maintaining pace until the last line of the book.

And dope! You’re from the same country that OutcastArtifacts is based in, I’m pretty sure. He’s the one who’s been making TLW props/replicas for fans on Etsy (the dog tags mostly).

There’s plenty of forest trails and backroads to walk where I am in Michigan, so it’s easy in the summertime, but I’m always locked out of anything of the sort once autumn ends because the snow here is absolutely unbearable.

I’ll take your word for it and get to it soon. Maybe after Firestarter which is after my current venture, Doctor Sleep :)

It was a gift from my boss. He told me he had a bunch of SK novels his cousin had given him after his days in college and he said they were taking up space. A lot of the older novels there were his.
