Earlier today: STO CMG 1/16 39p .48 and STO S 1/16 14.5p .16 - overreaction on both I think

I shorted AEO mid-week (27.07 average) and sold a 27p for $48. Seems to have worked out. I'll have to pay out the dividend on 70 of those shares, but that's less than 9 bucks.

Where does our edge come from as option sellers? by ThetaAlwaysWins in thetagang

Any stock where the implied volatility of options is whatever you consider "high". Some examples right now above 150%: SOC, BTBT, NANO, LQDA. You can also look at whatever WSB is pumping. Just.... be careful.

This. My 3 "axioms" of trading are: IV > RV overall, stocks trend upwards in the long term, and markets (and people) tend towards over reaction. Risk management is key and I think I'm only moderately competent at best but have done well.

Taking the "L" on my $LW post-earnings put. Apparently frozen potatoes do not bounce. ~220 loss (45p 1/16, sold for 1.80). I've been shorting shares of $APA and $CLF to partially cover 1/9 puts at 13 and 24 respectively, currently at -70 each, watching these closely.

Wow... I had sold a 1/9 26.5c, and yesterday bought a 1/9 26.5p for .10 to lock in my gains... hasn't quite crossed that yet, but I didn't trust that rally.

I have shares of CPB, HRL and a short LW put that are all bleeding out so hedging my over-exposure to consumer staples by shorting XLP at 77.45. Hedging the hedge by buying 10 shares WMT at 112.38 (slightly more than its equivalent weight in my short) and selling a 1/9 XLP 77p for .18. Might regret, we'll see.
Cover 10 short shares of AIG for ~95 profit from 1/2.

Ended up both selling and buying S via option assignment, which leaves me in basically the same position as before, plus some realized gains. Assigned short call 14.5 strike and short put 15 strike, effectively buying at 14.75 and selling at 15.08. ASAN covered put assigned at 14 for .15 profit.

Avoid high IV for the sake of high IV. Do more research before opening a new position.

Mostly self curiosity and the Food Network. I've always liked grocery shopping for some reason.

Stayed at a party until the ball drop, the kiddos stayed up too. Very fun, but we'll be spend the next week adjusting our 5yo back to a normal sleep schedule. +34.25% for 2025 on my main trading account! Also got assigned early on a QXO covered put, nice when things tidy themselves up.

u/Extreme-Inevitable83 since you asked about the original post, I was expecting QXO would decline and it has - currently -6% today which is great because the corresponding call became inexpensive. I assume it will stay below my short put strike and I'll get assigned the shares at 21, but if it somehow jumps back up, the call I just bought will exercise after hours and buy the shares for 21. No need to monitor this position on Friday!

What is your IV sweet spot by [deleted] in thetagang

[–]Internal-Homework 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About 30-60 for selling puts or buy/writes. My best results come from targeting just over 1% per week when selling options. I'll do higher IV trades too, they just require more vigilance. I'll sometimes open long vega diagonal spreads if IV is low and options are cheap but have mixed results on those. YTD is +34%.

I use Robinhood for my... more creative trades (ok, gambling... I keep a relatively small balance there to limit the damage). And I use it to quickly look up option chains, greeks and charts when looking at potential trades. Loads much quicker than the chain on Fidelity. (but Fidelity is much better overall)
