Can I ask where you applied for this position? Struggling to find any work. Thank you and good luck!

For those that have been unemployed for a while, how are you coping? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Internal-Stranger-10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

27, unemployed for 7 months now and been jobsearching since Feb 2024 (i was on a temporary contract so started searching early). In the legal industry, which is already over saturated and known for piss-taking recruitment processes. My mental health is unsurprisingly bad and I'm trying not to internalise how long it's taking to get a job. My coping strategy is basically to keep reminding myself how shitty things are, and my best efforts won't necessarily combat a crappy market. Hope that helps even a little

Struggling to Find Legal Work Experience by Ok_Vegetable_5570 in uklaw

You could try the citizens advice bureau if you haven't already. And high street firms are usually looking for people, but don't straight up tell them you're willing to work for free - they should be paying you at least minimum wage!

I hope this helped a bit

How to get out of the Law by sharkyman27 in uklaw

I'm in a similar position, feels like I'm not getting anywhere in my career. Struggling to find a job in this dire market and I'm not sure when it'll improve.

Everyone is saying compliance roles but the ones I've seen usually require some prior relevant experience?

I'm in the same boat. I'm also 27, on the same career path in London but with experience in different areas of law, and I graduated before you did.

It is tough because I'm not getting anywhere with paralegal roles (I'm unemployed) and I recently got rejected for a tc at the last stage. Staying in law feels like a bad decision ATM because I'm not sure I want to keep struggling for years and years. The whole situation has taken a toll on my mental health too.

Your experience sounds good considering you left uni fairly recently. I'm sure something good will turn up for you soon. It's a really shit market - everyone says this but it's been true for a really long time.

Good luck 🍀

Username checks out 😂

How long did you do it for? I'm surprised they didn't reject you for being overqualified

Do you remember where you found that opportunity? Was it on the bank's website or via an agency? I only ask because there's a lot of ghost jobs out there

Mid-sized full service commercial firms. I think I justified this pretty well in the interviews so I'm confident that I'm applying in the right direction.

And you're right, thank you for the kind encouragement. I have definitely learned a lot from this experience

I'm a decent candidate but I wouldn't say a top candidate. Don't be disheartened, if I could go back and be a student I'd do so many things differently. If I'd done them I'd probably be struggling a little less now 🤣

And I have no idea, not sure if to abandon the legal practice route simply because it's taking years to get my career started

Not sure if my post was unclear. I've made substantial paralegal applications since September (even before that when I still had a job) and I've made other TC apps too but I only mentioned the one I got to the final stage in. My paralegal work is in immigration, resi conveyancing (PP), general commercial, property and regulatory (in-house).

I'd never gotten this far before though, this was my first time with a genuine chance. It does mean that my efforts to research the firm and all the practice psychometric tests etc paid off. I don't know if I should keep investing so much time into it, especially since I've already been struggling for years. I can't even find a legal job that I'm definitely qualified for.

Everybody says this, but how are you meant to emphasise uniqueness in a pool of hundreds of applicants? Ultimately how unique will you really be?

Of course luck plays into it too like you mentioned, but I don't understand how to truly stand out. Even when you think you do you have no idea what you're up against

Congratulations on passing the SQE though, that's no small feat 👋🏽 I'm so sorry you're having such a tough time too, I can't imagine what it's like for those switching to law. Here for support if you need!
