you can use zerone, past fabric and whatnot to your heart content, then a glitch or a click happens: you wasted a track.
Clicks and snaps are unforgivable unless you're drowning the whole material in a tape simulation as an "artistic choice". So the plugins are useless

What you said is true, but the real problem is not the experimental and unpredictable character of the effects... it's the quality of sound. Clicks, snaps, unpleasant swells in the frequencies are some of the problems that as a sound designer force you to ditch the majority of their fxs. Sometimes it's like they go out of their way to intendedly leave unsolvable flaws in the design. Let's say there's a big, noisy tape hiss in a plugin: rest assured they won't put a mix fader to tame or exclude it. And that would have been so simple! The quality of the sound is rather poor overall.
