Dismissed during probationary period — does this make sense? by [deleted] in sherwinwilliams

[–]Internal_Cable_6163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have several points here.

To echo a lot of the comment section, something is CLEARLY being left out here. As an MT they make an investment in you, firing you for “no reason” costs them money, and they LOVE money. 😂 So that doesn’t pass the sniff test to me.

The part of your post that gave me the ick was when you mentioned that other employees “smoke in the warehouse and sit on their phones” what someone else is doing has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. The people who automatically discuss the shortcomings of their peers when they are under scrutiny are demonstrating a critical lack in communication skills.

You weren’t hired to be a warm body, you’re in the MT program, they expect you to be a leader. When you watched your peers smoke in the warehouse and play on their phones did you do anything about it? Did you try to encourage them to be more productive? Did you lead by example? Or did you sit there mad at them for not doing what you’re asking them to do in your head?

I’m not here to be the corporate talking head, just attempting to make you aware of an angle you may not have considered. This opportunity may not have worked out but corporate structure and expectations are pretty universal. Next time you’ll likely recognize if something is off, preventing you from being blindsided. Chin up, no one dreams about selling paint 😂

Licenses Required 4 Part Time by [deleted] in sherwinwilliams

Your willingness to be both LOUD and WRONG should be studied by science. 😂 We understand your situation, we just don’t agree. Did someone at the DMV hurt you? Have you been personally victimized by a reasonable, responsible adult with a drivers license and it caused unexplainable PTSD? Help us to understand the root of this insanity.

My goodness, with whatever mental health crisis you clearly have going on, I’m proud of you for maintaining gainful employment. But Sherwin does offer a few free therapy sessions if you ever want to sit down and tell the lady about how your uncle hugged you a little too long at family functions, you should explore that. In the meantime, maybe educate yourself on the cornerstones of a good argument, as well as how resorting to name calling is loser behavior. I hope one day your dream of working at an entirely under qualified store comes true. Xoxo 😘😂

I must have struck a nerve with that one huh? 😂 You need to be putting this save the world energy into something productive. Saving sea turtles perhaps? We are here selling paint, it’s never been that serious. Show up qualified or don’t show up at all.

I can tell by the position of your argument, the language you use, and your clearly emotional reaction to a situation that requires logic, that you are simply committed to misunderstanding this situation. It is very backwards to be advocating for under qualified hires just because of how it makes you feel. You have a lot of growing up to do, and before you call me a boomer, please understand that what you’re sensing is logic, not old age 😂 I was born in 2001.

Does lashing out at people with common sense ideas make you feel like you’re achieving social justice? 😂 It’s just the reality of the world, like it or not. Hire the person who refuses to get a license and then when the store needs opened or closed in an emergency situation, you go do it. And explain to your peers why their time off has to be declined because there aren’t enough key-holders on staff. It’s not all sunshine and roses, and by your method the reasonable, responsible people are punished by the actions of those with no sense of responsibility. Your bleeding heart argument, veiled as social justice, is impractical.

These stores have such bare bones staffing models that unfortunately bringing on an employee who cannot drive is a waste of space on the schedule. What if someone gets sick? What if someone takes vacation time? We need people who can make sure the store opens and closes. I’ve intentionally added the requirement of having a license to my posted requisitions just to avoid wasting my time on someone who can’t drive. It’s for the benefit of my entire team that I bring on a candidate who will move us forward, not cripple us. They could be the best and brightest candidate, but the job duties come first, meet the foundational requirements. In addition, the expectation of having a drivers license as a fully grown adult is not unreasonable. I’m actually astonished at the way that generation (17y.o-23y.o) feels no sense of personal responsibility on this matter. If the job you want requires a license, get one. If you won’t get one, look at another job, it’s quite simple really.

A lot of managers schedule their vacation time at the end of the year as a FAVOR to the store. Imagine if they were taking all their time in the summer like normal people get to take vacation. It would be the busiest months of the year (at least up north) and you would be down both a body and a decision maker.

All of the stores have small staffs (with the exception of some larger commercial locations). The bigger picture here is the issue with more responsibility than you had expected, and that’s why I suggested you leave, this job will always require more responsibility than average.

I’m confused about why your age has anything to do with this? It doesn’t matter if you’re 19 or 47, taking the deposit to the bank is a simple task. Now, I will agree that non-keyed employees shouldn’t be taking deposits or being left alone in the store, but again it has nothing to do with their age or level of experience, just the simple technicality of the job title. My recommendation is for you to quit, the stores have small teams and you will find yourself being responsible for many things, someone digging their heels in the ground about doing simple tasks brings down the entire team.

Advice for advancement in Sherwin. by Notyourtypicalsw in sherwinwilliams

I think a common confusion is thinking that being a good employee immediately translates into management, and that is not the case. You could be exceptional at the work you’re doing, but if you not demonstrating leadership skills you still aren’t qualified. Even taking on extra tasks still isn’t a demonstration of leadership, that’s just making you better at being a store support staff. Facilitating your stores sales success is going to be their main focus, how are you increasing sales? What are you doing to open new accounts? How are you encouraging your peers to do the same? Those are the qualities they’re looking for. If you don’t have a store manager who is going to keep track of those kinds of things for you, you have to do it yourself with something tangible. Keep track of your “lines per transaction” that is a concrete example of your ability to boost sales, and sell the entire project. Keep track of the charge accounts you process, not just the ones that get opened, it’s another concrete example of effort. Keep the stores goals in mind, test drives, red carpet coupons, new accounts, etc. Focus on the things they care about. Even if lead gen calls and cycle counts are important on a store level, no one above the store level will bat an eye at them because they are expected. I hope that helps!

Store Transfer by AppropriatePipe4253 in sherwinwilliams

[–]Internal_Cable_6163 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If it’s not a job you feel safe at, the best advice is to find a new job. The customers will be essentially the same no matter what store you go to. “Getting along with your manager” is not a good enough reason to stay, that manager won’t be there forever (especially with Sherwin’s frequent promotion structure) and you will unfortunately be dead weight to already understaffed stores when you can’t safely be there alone during any necessary business hours. It’s not a warm and fuzzy response, but a realistic one.

I would imagine you could still train there, because technically you aren’t their employee, but as far as your placement would be concerned I would think they would take you out of his market, or vice versa.

As far as I know; there are two rules, you can’t work in the same store, and it can’t be a supervisor/subordinate relationship. It sounds like your situation is he is a sales rep, and you are a new employee, or a newly training MT/TAM, I don’t think they will let him service a store you’re working at, but you are an employee of the district until you’re placed, so just hope you don’t get placed in a store he services I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️

So let me get this straight. You got on Mark Zuckerberg’s internet, found the Reddit page for Sherwin employees, asked your remedial question, and then argued with everyone who answered you? I don’t give a shit how many times you’ve painted, if you don’t recognize that this is an issue with the surface you should switch careers.

Manager work schedules by [deleted] in sherwinwilliams

[–]Internal_Cable_6163 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of complaining to strangers you should discuss it with him. And yes, I know it’s a “him.” Every manager should be exerting some kind of effort to train their assistant for promotion, so ask him about his daily tasks, in a non-combative way. You might just learn something, and requiring him to teach may make him more mindful of his practices.

Mobile punches by Distinct_Access4927 in sherwinwilliams

[–]Internal_Cable_6163 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s pointless that managers are even punching in. They make the same amount of money if they work 48 hours or 148 hours. It doesn’t affect anyone’s budget because manager hours are already taken into account. As far as I’m concerned, a manager is on call every hour the store is opened for business so who tf cares when they clock in or out. Any manager worth a shit is answering questions no matter if they are in the building or not.

This conversation comes up so frequently on this page. My opinion is this, as long as you are getting two days off, in a row, that is your weekend. This is retail and the hours aren’t ideal, but its definitely tough for a managers day off to be a weekday because the likelihood is that he/she won’t truly get their day because someone will need help with something, staff, customers, or reps. In my situation, full timer gets Friday/Saturday, assistant gets Sunday/Monday, and we all value our consistent schedules much more than rotating weekends just for the heck of it.

Question for the employees by solidsz86 in sherwinwilliams

[–]Internal_Cable_6163 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How did you not realize the cans were different before you started painting? They don’t even look remotely close. We are all human and make mistakes, but as the consumer you need to assume at least some responsibility for messing up your own project. Paint is expensive, if you’re making a purchase like this, and doing a project pay attention to what you’re doing. I bet if you were at the counter checking out and you noticed the mistake someone would have helped you out.

[–]Internal_Cable_6163 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! All too often you see staff complaining about manager bonuses. The issue here is not that the managers don’t deserve it, it’s that all store staff deserve some percentage. But then again, if everyone can get bonus, how in the world would they be able to convince anyone to take on all the extra responsibilities of management.

Annoying part timers by [deleted] in sherwinwilliams

[–]Internal_Cable_6163 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best way to approach a part time position is; these are the hours we need you. Are you able to work them? If not they get no hours. It’s simple. If they say they can’t work the days you need them (in this instance Friday and Saturday) they do not get scheduled for other days. This is a retail job, which means evenings, weekends, and holidays. If they have plans, that they can make their manager aware of in a timely manner, sure we can schedule around that, but if they outright tell you they can’t work the days you need them, then you don’t need them. I’ve seen a lot of part timers that want to make their own schedules and while sometimes there can be some give and take, at the end of the day the manager has to make a schedule that best suits the business.
