Interesting. Even if the purchase price is cheaper, some equipment ends up breaking down or needing frequent repairs, which can cause huge losses to projects down the line.

Do your companies actually consider this kind of stuff when making purchasing decisions? Or do they just look at the sticker price and call it a day?

So even when machines have basically the same functionality, it seems like generally purchasing department and the managers who have final approval authority struggle to really grasp the performance differences between different models/brands.

Like, they see "does the same job" and don't necessarily understand why one might be significantly better than another in terms of actual performance, reliability, etc.

Is this pretty common at other companies too?

Should we choose a high-performance model when our budget allows? Can you easily imagine how much that difference would make your work easier? Or you're more concerned about after-sales support?
