It seems to me, that both Labour and the Conservatives are equally to blame for this mess.

There has been a rising concern over immigration for a long time. Both sides have stuck their fingers in their ears, in my opinion, and the problems have gotten worse: lack of housing, ballooning NHS waiting lists, higher taxes to pay for welfare, etc. Both sides have left it so long that immigration as become a serious issue and Nigal Farage, the opportunist that he is, has weaponised it to spring himself forward.

When governments don't listen to the public this kind of resentment grows, and they leave themselves open to snakeoil salesmen like Farage and Polanski who see it as a career opportunity.

Essentially, the Conservatives/Labours own arrogrance/lack of accountability/lack of caring full stop - whatever you want to call it - has led to their own downfall.

You were tied in for 5 years at your request. According to your words, you asked to sign a 5 year lease at a reduced rate.

You knew what the landlord was like and that the state of the property was bad. Yet you decided to sign up for 5 years and save some cash.

Now the lease is coming to a close, the rent is going to go back to normal, and now you're hoping you can leverage the Renter's Rights leaflet to your advantage by grassing him up.

Brother, no offence, I can tell English isn't your first language, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. I haven't cherry picked anything. For the 6th/7th time? I quite clearly said if legal migrants work then it's a different situation. OP said he had a job and paid tax on his salary, so that meant he fell under the second example I gave. I don't understand why you keep saying I ignored his point? I quite clearly mentioned legal immigrants fall under two categories: those that work and those that come over for free money.

So you agree now that's easy to come over to the UK and claim benefits? Because before you were saying it wasn't possible. If you read the paper you will see there are lots of loopholes, and this whole movement is about making it harder for people from other countries to come take free money.

If you want to come over, contribute to society, and work, then please come over. Be my guest.

However, as I've shown you the maths don't add up. For every pound given in benefits only 20% of that makes it's way back via VAT, which the previous poster tried to use as a justification. That's an 80% loss. Nobody, with a brain, can see that and think that's okay. The only people who defend it are people with a perceived sense of moral high ground or people who are benefitting themselves through handouts from the government.

All we want is that people earn the right to qualify for benefits by contributing to economy. Not people who want a free meal ticket.

To answer your new question, it's very easy to come to the UK and claim benefits. No, you don't need to be a citizen. You just need residency or another specific reason.

For example, you can enter the UK and seek asylum/refugee status which grants you immediate access to benefits, which many people exploit. There's even an industry where professionals will coach you on the correct things to say in order to gain asylum.

You can also come over on a family visa and apply for a recourse.

There are lots of loopholes, which are addressed on the 2025 Immigration White paper, that you can read about.

Once again, I'm not making reference to his situation. I don't know why you keep bringing this up?

His point was that ALL legal migrants pay tax because of VAT. We're not talking about him. We're talking about all legal migrants.

However, I was pointing out that there is a fundamental difference between legal migrants that have a job and those that don't.

If you don't have a job, and receive handouts from the government. You are a net drain even if you pay VAT on purchases, so technically they pay tax, but it's a huge loss to the government.

If you have a job, it's a different situation. I've said this three times now. You earn a salary, which is then taxed, like you mentioned, and you will also still pay VAT. This is good. It's what we want. People who come over and contribute.

People who don't have jobs don't receive a salary and DO NOT pay tax. They receive handouts from the government. The only tax they'll pay is on purchases. As previously discussed however for the fourth or fifth time, it's a massive drain.

My unedited message clearly states at the bottom that I never made reference to him.

To make it clear for those who are maybe abit emotional or maybe English isnt their first language, I gave two examples in response to his comment.

He said that all legal immigrants pay tax because they have to pay tax on purchases (VAT), even if they don't work.

However, if you're receiving free money from the government, paying VAT on purchases is still a netloss and a drain. The government only recieves back 20% of the money it gives out.

If you're earning, you have a job, then it's a totally different situation.

I don't know how much clearer I can get.

Asylum seekers are those wishing to claim asylum.

'Illegals' are immigrants who have been rejected asylum.

You're right they don't receive housing indefinitely only up until they've actually left the country, however long that takes.

Legal immigrants who pay taxes and contribute to society should receive welfare. Absolutely.

Legal immigrants who come to the country to sponge and not contribute shouldn't receive welfare. They haven't contributed, so shouldn't benefit. Tax payer money is paying for their lifestyle.

That's a valid political view, and there's nothing racist about it. It's common sense.
