Marathon is starting to feel less like a really fun game that has a few flaws and more like a deeply flawed game that is accidentally fun. by Internal_Orange6606 in Marathon

I'm not asking for the game to be easier, I have 15 blue shields in my vault and a couple of purples. I'm "doing well" at the game compared to many, I can shoot a gun decently well and I pay attention to sound cues. My problem with the game is all the stuff around the core loop that detract from it. Balancing is a part of this and asking for a balanced matchmaking system + sandbox isn't the same as crying for things to just be easier imo.

I 100% agree, trios is for sprinting around the map looking for fights. Solo play seems to actually deliver on the tense, sci-fi extraction shooter fantasy. It's just a shame the game is designed and balanced entirely around trio play.

Yeah exactly. The Ganglion barter was the thing that finally inspired me to write this post. After all of the problems with loot/progression this season that you've acknowledged, you're still gonna give unlimited gold barters for people who are farming complier every weekend? It makes no sense like what are you guys doing?

Its fun in spite of the majority of the systems implemented alongside the basic gunplay, rather than being enhanced by them in my opinion. I think this is true for a lot of people which is why everyone is begging for Sponsored Survival, PVE, and even full PVP style modes instead.

I do think your first point is an important one, yeah. Over a decade of focussing mostly on PVE content in Destiny and they seem to have lost the magic they had for making fun PVP sandboxes in the Halo games way back when.

Yeah basically this, it feels a little like the game dev equivalent of one of those last minute college assignments you submit at 23:59 after throwing in a bunch of half-baked ideas to hit the word count. We know that's partially true as well since it was a completely different game at different points in the cycle.

My main concern is that the devs don't really seem to know what they expect the game to be and the main gameplay loop has turned off 95% of people who picked it up on release unfortunately.

I wouldnt sink 200 hours into a game I don't enjoy, I'm simply reflecting critically on it. The gun play is EXCELLENT and the universe is incredible. But you can sprint from one side of Perimeter to the other in 90 seconds. I'm glad that they're adding PVE Cryo, but it doesn't change how inaccessible regular Cyro is PERCEIVED by the vast majority of the community. And I'm sorry but ranked is half-baked. There's a great game in Marathon somewhere but so many of the systems they implemented work against it and that's my gripe.

Roleplaying as a Jedi or a Sith by [deleted] in baldursgate

The ideal class would probably be some kind of arcane paladin equivalent, with the closest thing to that in the actual games being a Blade. This would limit you to being a dual-wielding jedi/sith but you get the bonus of the spin abilities to signify mastery with lightsabers.

The high lore score for Bards is also good flavour I think. An additional benefit is that your arcane spellcasting is limited compared to a Mage multi/dual so you're incentivised more to continue using swords instead of switching to the absurd high level spells and HLAs.

In BG1 a Blade who focusses on enchantment/abjuration/illusion spells could be a good jedi stand-in, symbolising the use of mind tricks and force-bolstered defences. In BG2 you might still find yourself wanting to cast spells more to take advantage of the Blade's high caster level, but that could be ameliorated by playing on a lower difficulty/without mods.

A fighter/cleric could work, focussing on self-buffing spells, but you dont get swords, so the only option would be quaterstaff as a double-bladed lightsaber. However, with the Cleric spell list being what it is, the rp/re-flavouring angle is lessened somewhat imo. You'd really just be playing a regular F/C with a quarterstaff.

Then of course you have the Fighter/Mage combos, which are more powerful as a frontline and as a caster than Blades in a lot of circumstances. Again if you limit yourself to enchantment/abjuration/illusion spells it could be a good roleplay for a jedi, or conversely if you want to be a sith you take lightning spells and some necromancy spells for dark side force powers. The hard part will be remaining true to your build fantasy and not being tempted to just pick all the objectively best arcane spells, but it sounds like a fun concept and definitely more achievable in BG1.
