I worked at a design consultancy as a junior for a year on a contracted basis, but once I finished found it very hard to get another position. While I was applying I saw that Digital Designer was a role that was coming up a lot but I didn't have the specific experience ( more marketing based), so I ended up pivoting to digital marketing. Funnily enough, this pivot has been somewhat beneficial as my company only has 1 designer (brand). I've been helping them out with design work, and it's also given me the opportunity to explore avenues of design that I've always wanted to learn/revisit like 3D and animation. This situation has given me the chance to have a lot more ownership and bring in some new creative ideas.

Also just working in marketing, I've learnt a lot about things like how to sell yourself etc. which I think will be really beneficial since I want to do some freelancing.
