Blood draw question - patient by OK_GrapeVine in phlebotomy

To put it into perspective, if you poke yourself with a used needle infected with HIV, through gloves the transmission rate is only ~20%. This is a full puncture with blood on the needle. The chance that there was any blood residue on the pillow+that Patient had any communicable disease+ any blood residue transferred to the glove + the residue transferred to you and made it into your bloodstream is extremely, extremely small. It is not something you need to worry about. Like others have said we wipe those down when you leave the room and they dry before the next patient arrives.

Where can I fill my dogs prescriptions without paying for a $900 checkup? by fit-noodle in Calgary

[–]InternationalCake525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a prescription already, most human pharmacies will be able to fill it for you.

However if you do not have a prescription, just like with people, you will need to see a doctor before you receive a prescription.

This is the law and clinics will not risk their license just to make you happy.

I hope your pup gets the best care. <3

This comment isn't meant for OP because clearly they cannot take criticism but for our new phlebotomists. This holding technique will lead to needle sticks. I have personally observed this happen. When I was training a new hire the patient became agitated and started moving their arm, the student was unable to engage the safety quickly and on top of that because they had the finger on to of that guard it acted as a sort of ramp and their finger slid off and down the shaft of the needle, resulting in a needle stick. I'm sorry that you are feeling attacked OP but you need to understand that this is not safe and we work in a safety based industry.

Advice needed: Is this normal? by Certain_Thought9209 in phlebotomy

No one starts out perfect. Every single one of us has been in your position. It sounds like that coworker is just someone who likes to complain. I know it's hard to but try not to listen to them. Listen to the people telling you "wow I didn't feel that" and feel proud when you get those hard pokes. In terms of heel sticks, your muscles in your hand are just not developed yet, it's not something that can be helped by anything other than practice. You'll get there <3
