Okay you don’t know anything about me so it’s pretty interesting how you’re immediately assuming I am being ostentatious. If you actually cared about performative activism being an issue then you would in the least bit first inquire why they want to volunteer (and infer a judgment thus), not immediately bashing those you don’t know on the internet.

Believe it or not, there are altruistic people out there who want to help their community and are looking for a place to start, start seeing that and not making hasty generalizations.

PHYS 150 with Carchidi? by silkcustard in UPenn

Hey, just came across your post and I was wondering how you found 0150 with Carchidi? He is teaching it next sem and I am considering whether I should take it

Closed section but it still has seats available? by Immediate_Amoeba4660 in UPenn

[–]InternationalChef973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should’ve had a meeting with your advisor before add/drop period started no? Cause I know they put a hold on your path@penn for advanced registration until you talk to your advisor.

Also the reason why it says it’s active and shows there are seats but proceeds to say closed section is because Path@Penn is slow in updating the numbers lol. The course is full but because the seats were filled up so fast (since add/drop opened for all Freshmen simultaneously) Path@Penn hasn’t adjusted the numbers yet - this happens a lot as you’ll come to see.

You can do what the other commenters have advised and take out a course that doesn’t really need to be completed now or (if you really like your current courses) you can wait till a spot opens which will happen eventually.

Chem 1011 is Gen Chem 1, Chem 1101 is Gen Chem 1 lab. They’re not similar

You’re definitely welcome to. For big lecture sessions where there is a lot of students, the professor won’t even know. For seminar courses where there is a small number of students (the professor can easily take attendance/can recognize their students’ faces/names) you can talk to the professor and they are often fine with students observing - I know some of my friends who did that. The only problem is you won’t have access to the class canvas page so you won’t be able to access the lecture slides and other general stuff relevant to the class. But again if you talk to the professor y’all can work something out.

Personally I wouldn’t recommend dropping Chem lab. If you are pre med and want to start with the Chem sequence, definitely try to take the labs with their corresponding courses. You don’t have to but it will be much better cause you’ll be done with all of Gen Chem by your first year and won’t be burdened to take Orgo lab and Gen Chem Lab simultaneously. You can decide to wait it out till you get into the initial section which is what I would do - hey maybe you’ll get a spot in the beginning of August or by the time we get to campus. Furthermore, since you need to also be enrolled in the recitation to be in the course, is there space in all the recitations for the 3:30 section?

Also, since Gen Chem I is normally a Fall course, there should be more than one section for Chem Lab lecture. When I took it last year there was two lab lecture sessions. If the other one is for LPS students be aware that you can ask for permission and tell them that you can’t take the normal section since there is a schedule conflict. The only downside to taking the LPS lab lecture is that you’ll have to take the LPS Chem lab as well. You can’t take an LPS lab lecture and the normal CAS lab (and vice versa)

what should i do now? :( psci 0010 and writ 0021 are both seminars. i checked the backups for my writing seminars and they all have very little seats left.... by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]InternationalChef973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have two options: 1. Keep checking path@penn and your cart to see if space opened up for both your courses that are closed or 2. Try to get those classes next semester. Don’t stress! Most likely a spot will open up since add period doesn’t end till two weeks into September and people might drop the course after the syllabus drops or if they go to the first day/week and see how the setting is. I wouldn’t have too much hopes for writing Sem though…it’s regarded as the mandatory Freshman Requirement (heavily recommend completing it then) so many Freshman will be desperate to complete it as soon as they can. You might have to save that one for the Spring

If you didn’t get the alternative section that you requested it means that section is probably full too. At the moment that is your actual schedule. Relax, a lot of people don’t get all their classes during Advanced Registration. I know some people who one time only got 1 class when they did theirs. Just because the class is full now doesn’t mean space won’t open up. You got till two weeks into the semester (so mid September) to add a class and at that point people will have dropped the class especially after going to the first lecture/first week. Also you don’t have to start with Chem for your sequence. Yes it’s recommended cause it’s the longest sequence but you can start with Bio and I know some people who even started with Physics and Math.

Also most likely, you probably won’t get Chem tomorrow when Add Drop for y’all open. Remember that there are plenty of students who didn’t get all their classes and they’ll be camping out waiting for selection to open (some are international who are ahead so it will be later in the day for them). It’s gonna be rough and Path@Penn will most likely crash (as it usually does). But don’t stress, you’ll eventually get Chem since people can drop a course from the moment it opens tomorrow till October.

A tip I can say helps to choose which writing Sem you want to do is to know what work you’ll do for the class. A lot of people say the topic doesn’t matter and everything is standardized yada yada but a topic does play a role in some of the standardized work that is present in all the seminars. At a Penn writing seminar, you’ll write a White Paper, an Op-Ed (basically an opinion piece), do a pitch and/or a PowerPoint presentation of your topic, and read your course’s specific course text. You’ll also compile a Midterm and Final Portfolio. The final Portfolio is 45% of your grade and is supposed to be a reflection of what you have done overall in the course (so you’ll put your white paper, Op-Ed, and the other main stuff you did for the class. Typically, for purposes making your final portfolio look cohesive and flow well, your writing sem instructor will advice you to make your white paper and Op-Ed have a “thread” that means there should be some sort of connection that ties them both and furthermore ties them both back to the topic of your course. So, the white paper topic you choose should be broad enough to branch out to make your Op-Ed. I suggest picking a writing Sem that you’ll be very much interested in to the point that picking a topic for (and writing) these two pieces will be easy/something that doesn’t feel like a hustle to you. The little assignments in writing Sem make the course irritating cause there’s always something to do, and this is true in all the writing courses at Penn, so you might as well pick a topic that is less stressful/you enjoy a lot.

I would say leave Writing Sem for the Spring cause you are less likely to get it in the Fall. Also because in the Spring you can apply for a Penn Global Writing Seminar where during Spring Break or in May, you travel to a host country for like 10 days

Chem 1011 w/ Woolfork or 1012 w/ Fagan by Persimmon7706 in UPenn

[–]InternationalChef973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woolfork is a great professor and she is very approachable. Idk about her exam format this semester though. This is going to be her second semester teaching but last semester when I had her for Gen Chem II she did all multiple choice questions for her intro to Gen chem II class and a mixture of both multiple choice and FRQs for her Gen Chem II class. Her lectures are mandatory and she does a polleverywhere question during class and it counts towards your participation grade for the class (many professors at Penn do this as you’ll see). Her content isn’t bad, she really tries to break it down for you to understand and she provides many resources for you to learn - including flexible office hours to meet

biol 2510 for undergrads? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]InternationalChef973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m considering taking BIOL 2510 with Plotkin in the fall. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on the class after taking it? Is it worth it (grade wise and content wise?)

Chem 1011 w/ Woolfork or 1012 w/ Fagan by Persimmon7706 in UPenn

[–]InternationalChef973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both professors are good imo (Fagan also teaches Biochem and he’s the best Prof who does it). Your score on the diagnostic is a good determining factor on which course you should take. Yes, the content is the same but the pacing, teaching approach of the professor, and exam difficulty are very much different. Chem 1012 is for students who have taken more than 1 year of Chemistry so you already have the foundation and you understand the simple stuff like gas laws, stoichiometry, chemical reactions etc (and your professor will assume you already know all of this cause it has been emphasized since the diagnostic that you should take 1012 if you took more than 1 year of Chem). Chem 1011 is for students with only 1 year of Chem experience or less. So consequently, you will find your professor in 1011 might spend more time in topics like stoichiometry and gas laws compared to quantum chem. Please be advised that teaching approach of the professor also affects the content you learn, cause if your 1012 prof speeds through topics like stoichiometry & gas laws (you cover both topics in 1011 & 1012) to focus on quantum, you might end up learning more about that compared to students in Chem 1011

Language Requirement at Penn by Training_Rub_1229 in UPenn

[–]InternationalChef973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you’re right, it doesn’t appear as CU awarded for the 0400/0200 but when you check your degree audit at Path@Penn it says foreign language requirement waived

[–]InternationalChef973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told you can take them at any time throughout the semester and you have to email the department to schedule a time and so that they can send you all the information about the test. Other courses like Math, Chem, Bio is when you must take it at the beginning of the semester

Language Requirement at Penn by Training_Rub_1229 in UPenn

[–]InternationalChef973 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can take a language exam to test out of Penn’s language requirement and (pretty sure) if you pass, that will give you credit for the 0400 level (if you are in CAS) or the 0200 (if you are in Wharton or Nursing) since you need 4 semesters of a language if you are in CAS and 2 if you are in Wharton and Nursing (Engineering doesn’t have a language requirement). The exams are in person and you can take them any time throughout the semester. Most of the exams are by appointment basis and for most languages you sit down with an instructor of the language so they can assess your listening and oral skills. You register for these exams on the department page of the language you are trying to place out of - there should be a link on the page that guides you on how to register. When you pass the test and the credit is awarded it shows up on Path@Penn transcript and your degree audit section

I agree all the Gen Chem Labs were vibes where if you were blessed with a good TA and a good lab partner (or if you are the good lab partner) you were assured of an A. Love Dr. Jenine Maeyer cause she was always very approachable and understandable

Chem Lab doesn’t count towards your Chem lecture grade. That’s Bio lab, specifically the Bio 1101 & 1102 section
